Description
Evaluates patient upon initial encounter to determine need for occupational therapy intervention. Evaluates and assesses patient's abilities and limitations.
Plans occupational therapy treatment program for each patient, based upon interpretation of evaluation results, interprets evaluation findings for patient, family, and patient care team members.
Develops realistic goals with patient input, explains treatment plan and goals to patient.
Implements treatment or supervises treatment provided by Occupational Therapy Assistant. Delegates routine care to supportive personnel as appropriate. Acts in a supervisory role to ensure proper execution of tasks.
Terminates occupational therapy services when patient has attained maximum benefit from occupational therapy, provides in-service education to members of patient care team to ensure follow-through of treatment program.
Evaluates, records, and reports on patient’s progress for review by other members of the patient care team. Communicates effectively with physician, other members of the patient care team, and others as indicated regarding treatment plan and patient response to plan.
Conducts and participates in training medical and nursing personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives.
Assists in directing/coordinating student educational experience.
Assists in directing COTAs, aides, volunteers, students/interns in their caseloads including treatment planning, goal setting, progress evaluation, and documentation.
Plans for discharge. Recommends adaptive equipment as needed.
Qualifications
Basic evaluation and treatment techniques.
General office practices and procedures.
Awareness of activities of the department and where it fits within the organization.
Medical or other department specific terminology including spelling and definitions.
Knowledge of Physical Therapy treatment techniques and modality use.
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy with certification from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy.
