What are the responsibilities and job description for the Audience Engagement Manager position at Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting?
The Audience Engagement Manager will lead and execute strategies to deepen audience engagement and amplify the reach and impact of our content across digital platforms. Working collaboratively with global teams, the manager will oversee newsletters, social media, and digital campaigns, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and audience needs. This role is pivotal in driving audience growth, improving user experiences, and fostering meaningful connections between our journalism, education and outreach programs, and diverse audiences.
The position involves a great deal of internal and external stakeholder management and communication within the Communications team, with other teams at the Pulitzer Center, and with journalist grantees, education partners, and other stakeholders. This role designs, implements, and maintains audience engagement strategies and processes that allow the communications team to communicate the Pulitzer Center’s mission and impact effectively and work efficiently and strategically with all teams across the Pulitzer Center. The manager builds and maintains effective methods of reporting on digital metrics and providing actionable insights to improve audience engagement. The manager also oversees the work of the digital communications staff.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead organizational audience and cross-platform strategy across newsletters, social media, and websites.
- Optimize digital platforms by integrating audience-centered communication strategy, with clear audience segmentation, and content personalization.
- Develop digital communication work plans, supporting our global storytelling and working closely with the Communications Director to shape our communications strategy.
- Oversee digital communications staff to optimize social media engagement and growth.
- Define and implement the organization’s newsletter product strategy.
- Establish digital metrics tracking systems to monitor work plan outputs and progress.
- Monitor user behaviour trends across digital platforms to identify key partners and prospective collaborators, optimizing our digital engagement strategies. Provide data-driven insights on digital performance and audience strategy, offering actionable recommendations for improvement.
- Support internal teams and editorial partners when needed with audience impact strategy and assist with the creation of audience centric communications materials and content to support key partnerships and fundraising.
- Oversee audience digital campaign strategy and execution in our four hub regions (United States, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa), supporting strategy and execution of localized campaigns.
- Manage agency relationships and contracts, ensuring alignment with goals and budget.
- Manage the Pulitzer Center’s digital advertising strategy to support audience awareness, lead generation, and fundraising goals. Launch, optimize, and report on paid media campaigns to promote journalism and education products or initiatives.
Qualifications
- Excellent communication and project management skills.
- Leadership experience, with a demonstrated ability to manage and inspire teams.
- Passion for journalism, education, and driving societal impact through storytelling.
- Proven experience in audience engagement, digital marketing, or communications, ideally within journalism, nonprofit, or media sectors.
- Strong understanding of digital campaign strategies, email marketing, and social media platforms.
- Proficiency in content creation and community management across digital social media platforms (Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok).
- Knowledge of paid media tools and SEO principles.
- Expertise in newsletter strategy and tools (e.g., Mailchimp, HubSpot, or similar).
- Analytical skills, with experience in audience research, A/B testing, and reporting metrics.
- Fluency in written and spoken professional English required.
- Priority will be given to candidates with language proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Bahasa Indonesian.
Location
This position is fully remote. We are actively looking for candidates from Latin America, Africa (particularly near the Congo Basin) and Southeast Asia. The position will be expected to work hours overlapping to standard business hours of the Washington, DC office (EST/EDT).
Compensation for non US-based employees
The Center uses an established compensation philosophy in administering compensation. Offers are determined based on candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position. All non-US salaries are calculated using an international conversion index, which includes estimates for comparable positions in the country of residence and the estimated cost of health insurance. We do offer paid leave benefits which include hours in recognition of local holidays,vacation, sick, parental, and bereavement leave. We do not offer health or retirement benefits for employees outside of the US.
