Nighttime Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) in a hospital setting
Job Type: Full-Time, Night Shift (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Job Summary: The Nighttime Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide advanced nursing care and clinical expertise to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) during overnight hours. The NP will work in collaboration with attending physicians, medical staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the highest level of care, manage acute changes in patient conditions, and deliver treatments according to best practices and evidence-based guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
* Direct Patient Care:
- Manage and monitor critically ill patients, including those requiring mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, and other life-sustaining interventions.
- Perform thorough physical examinations, collect patient histories, and assess complex clinical conditions.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as laboratory results, imaging studies, and other relevant tests.
- Initiate and adjust treatment plans, including medication management, wound care, and supportive therapies.
- Perform critical procedures such as central line insertion, arterial line placement, endotracheal intubation, and thoracentesis as credentialed.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work collaboratively with ICU physicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Act as a liaison between patients, families, and the healthcare team, providing regular updates and education on the patient’s status.
- Communicate effectively with the day-shift NP or physician team during shift handovers to ensure continuity of care.
Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly to acute changes in patient condition and intervene as necessary. * Lead and participate in rapid response and code blue situations.
- Ensure stabilization of patients during acute events and provide leadership during emergencies.
Documentation & Compliance:
- Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, clinical protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to evidence-based guidelines.
Qualifications: * Education:
- Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Licensure/Certification:
- Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in Texas.
- Board certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) preferred.
- Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) are preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as an NP in a critical care setting or ICU.
- Proven experience in managing critically ill patients independently.
Skills:
- Proficiency in critical care procedures and managing life-threatening conditions.
- Strong analytical and diagnostic skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to function well in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
Work Environment:
- Night shift position (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM) with rotating weekends and holidays.
- High-stress, critical care environment, requiring physical stamina, mental resilience, and sharp decision-making.
- May involve exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols.
