What are the responsibilities and job description for the PSL Sports Official position at PUMP?
The Pittsburgh Sports League (PSL) is hiring Sports Officials! If you have experience officiating football, kickball, softball, or volleyball, this may be the role for you! PSL offers 2-10 leagues per day, and we play Saturday through Thursday. We play at multiple locations throughout the city and are always looking for new referees and umpires. Duties:
- Officiate all scheduled games from start to finish maintaining standards of play, including but not limited to sportsmanship, inclusive atmosphere, and rules of the game.
- Enforce PSL rules and guidelines while officiating. Officials shall be able to explain PSL rules to participants when asked for interpretation.
- Ensure facility is safe for playing. If at any point it becomes unsafe to play, games must be called and on call staff member must be notified.
- Sports Official shall arrive prior to scheduled start time in order to setup and check teams in and shall enforce any time limitation rules, including but not limited to courtesy time, game length and facility hours.
- Record player attendance and game scores using your smartphone.
- Set up and tear down fields and facilities when applicable. Officials are responsible for the safeguarding of all PSL equipment.
- Settle any disputes during league events.
- Attend any training sessions scheduled for preseason or in-season.
Expectations:
- Officials are expected to be accountable for their games by arriving on time for events, enforcing PSL rules and guidelines, accurately reporting attendance and scores and reporting any incidents or irregularities to league staff.
- Officials must be CPR Certified.
- Officials will have a strong understanding of the sport they are officiating.
- Officials are expected to be strong communicators with league participants by appropriate explain judgments and league rules.
- Officials should communicate to league staff with enough notice any days when they will be unavailable to officiate.
- Officials are expected to handle conflict when situations arise during their leagues. Officials must appropriately discipline unsportsmanlike behavior and report player discipline to league staff.
- Officials will be relieved of their duties immediately for any reason that the PSL deems appropriate, such as drinking prior to or during games, inappropriate behavior towards players in the league, or failure to show up without notification.
Skills Needed:
- CPR/First Aid Certificate
- Officiating experience preferred but not required
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Sports knowledge
- Physical ability to keep up with the sports being officiated
