What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director, Sport Programs position at Purdue University?
This position will report to and work collaboratively with the Senior Assistant Director to develop and oversee Club Sports and Intramural sports, maintaining program offerings and staff operations. This includes fiscal management, staff development, program outreach, and identifying and implementing program modifications to serve the community more completely. This position will pay $49,000.00 per year.

This is an exciting opportunity to manage a sport program with wide reach, and dynamic students. Additionally, the Sport Programs team will provide crucial input for the development of the RecWell Outdoor Master Plan.
Club Oversight
- Oversee and manage all aspects of a club sports program (typically 30 teams). Develop a strategy and a vision that aligns with the departmental and university strategy and mission. Develop and implement appropriate program policies and procedures to ensure safe, inclusive, and educational programs and services. Work collaboratively with other department and university staff to develop and implement appropriate risk management protocols, and ensure all clubs are aware of their application to practice, games, and travel opportunities. Collaborate with marketing and web site personnel to develop appropriate marketing and promotional strategies while keeping with all Purdue requirements. Provide regular and appropriate assessments of the program to measure development opportunities, learning outcomes, participant satisfaction, and participation statistics. Develop and refine processes and operating procedures in Club Sports to streamline tasks.
Student Development
- Provide training and leadership for club officers, participants, and intramural employees. Ensure that officers are well versed in the mission, rules, and requirements of their particular sport/activity including league and national affiliations, the club sports program, the department, and the university. Provide regular guidance and development opportunities. Oversee the portion of intramural staff covering the supervision of club events. Assist with the assessment and development of all levels of intramural staff.
Intramural Oversight
- Responsible for the programming of a handful of intramural leagues/tournaments each academic year. This involves training staff for those sports, preparing registration, and managing teams through programming. This position may also assist with other trainings as their expertise dictates.
Financial Responsibility
- Oversee the operating and gift accounts for the Club Sports program. Serve as the unit lead for development and fundraising efforts for club sports. Work collaboratively with Purdue University Development and the individual clubs. Provide assistance and recommendations for operating and personnel budgets for clubs. Assist in the management of the Intramural Sports budget.
Other Duties
- Collaborate and assist with other divisional and departmental planning, policy development, implementation, evaluation, and special events, as assigned by RecWell leadership. Serve on assigned departmental and University committees. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in areas such as recreation, sport management, or related fields. Minimum of 2 to 3 years of relevant experience. Can consider direct graduate experience or undergraduate work and leadership experience.
- Ability to independently manage all aspects of comprehensive club sports programming
- Establish vision and strategies that will contribute to the development of a quality and innovative program.
- Ability to develop students' leadership, communication, conflict resolution, organizational, and teamwork skills.
- Knowledge of risk management issues in collegiate club sports and recreation.
- Must show ability to establish long and short term goals consistent with the mission of the university and the division.
- Must show ability to build, develop, and cultivate relationships across campus with a variety of constituents. Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and develop student staff.
- Successful candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, service-minded and adept at solving problems.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents. Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.).
