What are the responsibilities and job description for the Locksmith position at Purdue University?
As a Locksmith, you will:
- Install hardware in wood and metal doors, cabinets, desk drawers, cases, etc., including locks, closers, knobs, thumb turns and panic hardware.
- Work from blueprints or develop own drawings.
- Cut door pockets, drill holes, fit and test lock and other hardware.
- Perform lock pinning, keying, and key making operations.
- Reset combinations on safes and make repairs.
- Disassemble and repair various locks, including padlocks, combination, dead-bolt, safe, and door locks.
- Shorten steel doors, repair dented doors and wooden doors, replace panels, and reset or repair thresholds using expansion anchors and cement drills.
- Install doors and frames.
- Open broken locks or locks for which keys are unavailable, using small lock tools.
- Train and assist lower level Locksmiths with their learning.
- Overtime will be required in this position.
- Required to carry a pager.
- Your work will directly contribute to maintaining the security and functionality of Purdue's $600 million research enterprise and educational facilities.

Education and Experience:
Qualified candidates will need:
- High school diploma/GED is required.
- 3 years locksmith experience required.
- Locksmith certification preferred.
- University locksmith experience preferred.
Skills needed:
- Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with supervisor, co-workers and customers.
- Must have ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and able to read and interpret blueprints.
- Strong mechanical aptitude needed.
- Knowledge of the relevant equipment, machines and tools is required to promote security and protection of people, data and property.
- Must be able to install equipment to meet appropriate standards.
- Attention to detail is required.
- Basic computer skills and a familiarity with word processors and spreadsheets is necessary.
- Must be able to lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. or more occasionally.
- Exposed to adverse conditions including hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, machinery, moving parts, sharp objects, low voltage electricity and steam pipes and tunnels.
- Valid driver's license is required.
