What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician, 2nd Shift position at Purdue University?
The Maintenance Department at Purdue University Northwest is seeking a Maintenance Technician for the 2nd shift. Under functional supervision the Maintenance Technician will perform semi-skilled building maintenance work while completing service requests, working on minor projects, and when making repairs. Must be able to travel to other PNW locations as needed.
Pay: $18.00/hour, plus .30 shift differential
Schedule:
- Monday-Thursday 3:00pm-11:30pm; Friday 2:00pm-10:30pm May work periodic overtime
PNW Title: Service Maintenance Worker Afternoon
- Orders and picks up needed materials and supplies to perform work
- Works, as required, and supports the following functions: mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, electrical, roofing grounds, and building services
- Coordinates, documents, and performs preventative maintenance activities and informs immediate supervisor of necessary additions/deletions to facilities documentation
- Utilizes technology to complete work orders and communicate
- Perform other related duties as requested by a supervisor

- High school diploma/GED
- 2 years of experience in basic building repairs in an instructional or commercial setting
- Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize tasks in a self-directed work environment and maintain high levels of productivity while under functional supervision, with limited independent skilled work performed on building systems
- Demonstrated strong customer service and problem solving orientation; seeks to solve problems with a sense of urgency
- Possession of strong mechanical aptitude
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written form
- Maintain work logs
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work assignments
- Ability to handle any and all power tools, ladders, and other necessary power equipment as required
- Must have knowledge of standard practices and tools used in the maintenance and repair of building facilities
- Safety practices and procedures related to the building trades
- Basic math to add subtract multiply and divide
- Basic computer skills; ability to navigate a database
- Valid driver's license with good driving record (as determined by WL Risk Management via Motor Vehicle Records check)
- Majority of work includes walking and standing with very little sitting; climbing stairs and ladders up to 10ft high also included in work day
- Must be able to lift, push pull and carry up to 50lbs frequently and up to 60lbs occasionally
- May be subject to call back to the University for emergency purposes
- Must work overtime as needed
