What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pesticide Administrator position at Purdue University?
The Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) is the Governor-appointed pesticide state lead agency for the State of Indiana. The pesticide administrator reports directly to the State Chemist and serves as the primary compliance officer for overseeing, coordinating, directing, and supervising the operations of the statewide pesticide program at OISC, leading a team of managers in various areas such as licensing, compliance, laboratories, and product registration.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Direct and support the staff and operations of the state pesticide program, leading various teams, including 1) pesticide credentialing programs for commercial applicators, private applicators, dealers, and businesses; 2) formulation and residue sample laboratories; 3) pesticide compliance and inspection program; 4) pesticide product registration program
- Oversee the development and implementation of laws, regulations, policies, strategic plans, and standard operating procedures for the OISC pesticide program
- Develop proactive measures to prevent and/or detect violations of these laws, regulations and policies
- Partner with internal constituents and/or external agencies to investigate and resolve complaints
- Manage the compilation and negotiation of cooperative pesticide program and enforcement grants with the U.S. EPA
- Serve as the Executive Secretary to the Indiana Pesticide Review Board, including executing directives from the Board, developing quarterly meeting agendas, coordinating appointments with the Governor’s office, and serving as the public and media contact
- Engage and participate in national and state pesticide regulatory associations and meetings, potentially serving on committees or in leadership roles
- Provide guidance and updates to the State Chemist and Seed Commissioner on pesticide program needs, activities, and achievements, including resource needs, expenditures, and staff hiring and performance evaluation decisions
- Bachelors degree
- 6 years of relevant work experience in agricultural or environmental compliance
- In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associates degree 8 years of experience; HS/GED 10 years of experience)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to supervise professional staff and provide situation analysis and guidance
- Ability to provide critical thinking and legal analysis to a wide variety of technical and scientific issues
- This position has a hybrid schedule
