What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Affairs Specialist: Programs and Engagement position at Purdue University?
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Programs and Engagement, the Student Affairs Specialist, Programs and Engagement, will be responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating large-scale programs both with the Purdue Student Union Board for West Lafayette and Indianapolis, in addition to other Registered Student Organization events as seen fit by the Assistant Director and Director of Student Activities and Organizations. This position will work directly with students to assist with training in leadership development, programming skills, policy development, budget development and marketing. This person will help supervise major campus events, including safety and security, crowd control and compliance with contractual obligations and University policies. They will serve as on-site event supervisor and provide supervision of student volunteers, while representing the Student Activities and Organizations Office administratively. This person will cultivate and manage University-community partnerships, faculty partnerships and alumni networks that enrich campus programming both in West Lafayette and Indianapolis. As a specialist, this staff member will assist in the review all Activity Planning Forms and serve in an on-call rotation to provide consult to student organizations while planning events. Evening and weekend hours required.

PSUB / Organizational Involvement
- The Student Affairs Specialist will be responsible for advising 1-3 members of the Purdue Student Union Board’s Board of Directors.
- Assist in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating programs.
- Ensure all contracts, payments, and safety measures follow university policy.
- Assist in the budgeting process for the PSUB committees/positions they oversee.
- Attend weekly meetings; hold a weekly 1:1 meeting with each position they advise.
- Assist with Summer Programming as assigned by Assistant Director.
RSO Program Oversight
- Coordinate and provide support to Registered Student Organizations planning large-scale campus programs. Including, but not limited to contract review, payment process oversight, campus partner communication, and other needs.
- Provide on-site support as needed or requested for large-scale events.
SAO / Student Leadership Development
- Participate in the review of Activity Planning Forms.
- Responsible for leadership development of the students they advise in various student organizations within the Student Activities and Organizations department.
- Advise students daily regarding their programmatic objectives, creating a student-staff partnership that emphasizes the students' primary role in decision-making, but which acknowledges staff responsibility for ensuring fiscal solvency and compliance with organizational policies.
- Serve in a duty rotation to assist students in event needs.
Liaison
- Serve as a liaison to the appropriate committees related to the specific needs on behalf of the Student Activities and Organizations department and the Purdue Student Union Board.
Other Duties:
- Keep abreast of trends in student affairs administration.
- Serve on campus-wide committees representing Student Life and Student Academic Affairs.
- Collaborate with students, staff, and departments to enhance the quality of student life of the Purdue campus.
- Assist campus partners with programmatic needs, including serving as a resource.
- Other duties as assigned
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in college student personnel, business administration, human resources, education, or related field
- Minimum of 2 to 3 years of professional experience in a student affairs related field
- Internships and graduate assistantships will be considered. (Two years of a graduate assistantship in a college union or a student activities program, or related field, equals one professional year)
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in higher education
- Experience coordinating or participating in student groups
- Experience managing volunteers, students, or staff, as well as large scale/high risk programs
Required:
- Strong skills in decision making, communication, interpersonal and intercultural relations.
- Ability to coach and lead others, strategic thinking, and drive for results.
- Ability to supervise of volunteers and work with diverse student populations.
- A clear understanding of student development theories, co-curricular development, learning outcomes and ability to collaborate.
- Ability to relate well to students, develop rapport, trust, and work within a shared decision-making model with the students.
- Quick learner with attention to details.
- Ability to collaborate and relate to people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Must represent the university with professionalism, tact, and diplomacy at all levels.
- This position requires the ability to work evenings and weekend hours as business need dictates.
