About The Role.
We are seeking an individual to serve as a Director, Claims Counsel who will directly report to the SVP, Claims Counsel and will provide legal support to our Claims Department. This individual will implement and execute strategic litigation/coverage objectives that support business goals, including, but not limited to, managing coverage and extra-contractual litigation, providing coverage advice, ensuring superior service quality, managing costs, and realizing value for PURE. This position will work closely with both the Legal and Claims Departments to ensure bad faith and coverage litigation are strategically handled, as well as provide coverage advice and guidance to the Claims Department.
What You’ll Do.

This individual will implement and execute strategic litigation/coverage objectives that support business goals, including, but not limited to, managing coverage and extra-contractual litigation, providing coverage advice, ensuring superior service quality, managing costs, and realizing value for PURE. This position will work closely with both the Legal and Claims Departments to ensure bad faith and coverage litigation are strategically handled, as well as provide coverage advice and guidance to the Claims Department.
What You’ll Do.
- Manage litigation filed against the Company (including declaratory judgment actions and other claims related disputes) and extra-contractual/bad faith claims involving the Company. This includes selection and supervision of outside counsel; review of pleadings, motions, and other papers; coordination of discovery responses; and preparation of Company witnesses for deposition and trial testimony. It also includes managing appeals in all jurisdictions.
- Organize, complete, and deliver reports on a monthly, quarterly, or ad hoc cadence.
- Provide timely and appropriate legal advice on issues involving coverage, including the duty to defend insureds, first-party property disputes, and UM/UIM issues.
- Coordinate dispute and litigation management with internal business partners to ensure consistency with business strategies. Provide practical and strategic advice.
- Communicate in person and in writing with senior management team on matters of significance.
- Identify litigation trends and counsel business clients and other legal staff regarding opportunities to address those trends.
- Provide training to internal business partners on a wide variety of litigation-related topics.
- Work with the Claims Department on responding to subpoenas.
- Foster collaboration, partnership, and communication to achieve departmental, client, and enterprise goals.
- 5 years of insurance coverage and bad faith litigation experience with a law firm and/or an insurance company.
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. law school is required.
- Licensed to practice law in at least one jurisdiction in the U.S.
- Substantial experience litigating insurance-related and extra-contractual disputes.
- Excellent understanding of litigation strategy and execution, and property & casualty insurance and coverage legal issues.
- Strong understanding of claims handling processes.
- Extensive experience evaluating cases and managing litigation-related matters.
- Superior writing ability.
- Proven track record of building relationships and the ability to influence at senior leadership and executive level, both internally and externally.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work independently.
- Ability to demonstrate integrity and establish trust and credibility.
- Attention to detail, analytical, and solid problem-solving skills.

Salary : $135,000 - $150,000
