The Putnam Avenue Upper School is an innovative public middle school in the Cambridge Public Schools. The Role:
The Mathematics Instructional Support Coach (6-8) will work with school-based interventionists, special educators and teachers to support instruction and pedagogical content knowledge for mathematics teaching and learning. The math coach will report to the PAUS School Principal and the K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support instruction and assessment of 6–8 mathematics that is aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics Standards, Cambridge Public Schools Curriculum maps, and Cambridge Public Schools’ district and mathematics department goals.
- Support building-based teachers in their work through the design and implementation of school-based professional development, and strengthen the facilitation of school-based professional learning communities and facilitate regular school-based coaching cycles.
- Facilitate school-based mathematics workshops that include the most recent research on best practices, curriculum, and assessment.
- Support various district initiatives such as curriculum development and alignment and attend monthly district math coach meetings.
- Plan and facilitate teacher grade level meetings/PLC’s.
- Develop and implement assessment instruments and guidelines for the purpose of data-based analysis of student learning and understanding.
- Analyze school math data and support school mathematics teachers in their data inquiry cycle meetings with teachers to effectively use data to improve instructional practices.
- Assist in gathering and providing resources to school-based teachers.
- Provide school leadership in the use of instructional technology and electronic data collection tools.
- Create opportunities for community engagement.
- Represent Putnam Avenue Upper School in a variety of forums as requested by the school principal and/or the K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Math Coach/Interventionist, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
- Skill using inquiry-based instruction at appropriate grade levels.
- Experience with and ability to provide professional development to adults in the math curriculum, math content, and inquiry-based instructional strategies.
- A deep level of understanding of the Common Core State Standards of Mathematics including the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
- Knowledge of national mathematics reform literature.
- Experience using authentic, performance-based math assessments.
- Ability to provide professional development on the district's mathematics curriculum and support to colleagues and families from a variety of backgrounds.
- Experience supporting English Language Learners in the mathematics classroom and supporting students with IEPs in the mathematics classroom.
- Highly developed facilitation skills.
- Evidence of strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
- Experience analyzing common core mathematics standards and identifying appropriate tools and resources for instruction.
- Familiarity with K-8 mathematics resources including, Illustrative Mathematics.
- The ideal candidate will have energy, a sense of humor, a commitment to teaching all children, evidence of leadership capacity, and a belief that all children and teachers can learn.
- At least 5 years of recent, successful experience teaching mathematics and/or coaching teachers of mathematics in student-centered classrooms with inquiry-based methodologies aligned to the mathematical practice standards in an urban, multicultural setting is preferred.
- Proven leadership capacity and ability to work cooperatively with staff and parents.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Education or higher from an accredited college or university strongly preferred.
- Massachusetts Teacher Licensure in Mathematics Grades 5-8 required.
