Description
The Ultrasound tech is qualified both academically and clinically to provide health care services, applying sonic energy to assist in diagnosis or treatment. Demonstrates anatomy for interpretation and/or intervention by, or at the request of a licensed practitioner. Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complementary to medical ethics. Applies appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure. Serves patients of all ages from newborns to the elderly.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs diagnostic Ultrasound procedures.
- Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure, assuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner.
- Prepares patient procedures, providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
- Selects the appropriate transducer frequency and transducer for each examination. Exercising the clinical judgment required to deviate from normal techniques when necessary.
- Positions the patient and equipment to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.
- Performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations in all specialty areas in various locations within the hospital (Radiology Department, Emergency Room, etc.)
- Immobilizes patient as required for appropriate examination.
- Utilizes ancillary devices to obtain a permanent record of the procedure (cameras, multi-format cameras, video printers, color printers, and laser printers).
- Verifies informed consent for and assists a licensed practitioner with interventional procedures (needle localizations, aspirations, and biopsies).
- Practices aseptic techniques as necessary.
- Provides a means of reviewing the accuracy of all Ultrasound examinations.
- Maintains knowledge of anatomy and physiology and the effect of disease process as related to ultrasound. Keeps abreast of new techniques buy attending seminars and reading professional journals.
- Performs all duties and responsibilities as outlines in the position description for staff radiographer.
- Provides patient education and calls patients to verify appointment times and answer any questions.
- Completes the set up and clean-up of the procedure room. Maintains inventory of supplies.
- Assists in maintaining records, respecting confidentiality and established policy. Maintains quality control and service records on the ultrasound equipment.
- Provides practical instruction for students and/or other health care professionals.
- Participates in the continuous quality improvement for the Ultrasound department. May be responsible for specific quality control duties in the assigned areas.
- Assumes responsibility for assigned area and reports equipment malfunction.
- Holiday and on-call coverage is required. Performs other duties as assigned.

License/Certificate Required: Yes

Job Requirements:
• Completion of an AMA accredited program in diagnostic ultrasound OR 6 months of full time, on the job training in ultrasound technology. Must fulfill competency requirements under the directions of a competent Sonographer.
• Registry as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, ARDMS or ARRT or registry eligible.
• In-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
• Ability to improvise from standard procedures when necessary.
• Knowledge of ultrasound techniques and the ability to complete the initial interpretation of examinations in the following areas: Obstetrics, gynecologic, abdominal, color doppler, peripheral vascular.
• Knowledge 2-D mode, A-mode, M-mode, B-mode, digital doppler and real time techniques.
