Summary description:
The Portfolio Tax team is responsible for the tax accounting of the Putnam mutual funds. The team analyzes fund accounting reports and applies the required IRS tax code and regulations to the Funds’ portfolio of investments and transactions.
The Portfolio Tax Analyst is responsible for the preparation of income and capital gain distribution calculations, producing various reports, and analyzing data extracts for accuracy. The Analyst will use Excel and data extracts to categorize and calculate book-tax adjustments related to transactions and holdings in the mutual funds.
The Portfolio Tax Analyst interacts with many business areas across the firm as well as our external audit firm. The Analyst is a critical role in the daily operations of the Portfolio Tax team and requires an ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where attention to detail, analytical skills and strong communication skills are essential. The position offers excellent opportunities to learn and develop expertise in mutual fund taxation, as well as a more in-depth knowledge of Putnam funds.
Primary responsibilities:
- Prepare fiscal and excise distribution calculations by utilizing multiple data systems
- Prepare income tax returns per fund’s fiscal year end
- Prepare interim tax distribution monitors
- Act as a liaison between internal departments (Reporting, Control, Tax Reporting & Compliance), external audit firm, and State Street
- Analyze data extracted from various systems for accuracy
- Calculate multiclass distribution rates
- Provide Financial Reporting with required tax information and disclosures for inclusion in the Funds’ financial statements
- Reconcile various general ledger accounts to fund accounting reports
Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field
- Experience in retail or institutional mutual fund accounting is preferred, but not required
- Strong analytical skills, positive team attitude and attention to detail
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
