The PUYALLUP TRIBAL HEALTH AUTHORITY, located in Tacoma, Washington is seeking a Health Information Technician. The Health Information Technician is responsible for using the electronic health record system to prepare and maintain patient health information including scanning and electronic filing of documents as required. They also process continual flow of health information materials, records release requests, health record updates and deliver/retrieve documents within organization.

ESSENTION JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Uphold and maintain confidentiality of all patient health information and adhere to PTHA confidentiality rules, policies and procedures.
- Prepare patient documentation for scanning into electronic health record (EHR) system which may include sorting various types of paper documents, reviewing documents and organizing loose papers.
- Proficiently read and interpret technical and complex documents to determine and accurately select, verify and scan patient documents into EHR system, via scan and file or batch scan method, as per organization guidelines.
- Audit and review quality of scanned images, ensure documents are completely captured, and index scanned images into the appropriate location within the EHR system, through visual and other modes of inspection of documents to ensure integrity, accuracy and data reliability.
- Identify and accurately re-file electronic documents in EHR that have been inappropriately misfiled.
- Accurately process, according to established policies/procedures, routine and complex release of information (ROI) requests from electronic and paper records, including reproduction in either digital or paper format, and complete requests within two business days.
- Documents release of information within the patient electronic health record.
- Frequently check EHR system and inbox for records requests and electronically or physically deliver charts to departments within two business days, or as soon as possible.
- Accurately obtain and return hard copy charts from/to offsite storage as needed, according to established guidelines and procedures.
- Maintain integrity of data archive by managing files and charts that are archived.
- Accurately route incoming faxes to appropriate departments/providers in a timely manner.
- Process requested documents for medical/pediatric departments via fax or paper copies.
- Provide professional and compassionate service to patients who are requesting health records.
- Keep updated on HIPAA and privacy laws and help document and enforce them throughout all departments.
- Assist with training of newly hired Health Information Technicians as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of a medical terminology course or ability to complete within six (6) months of hire.
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience working in a health information management role, coordinating with external organizations to provide and retrieve patient medical charts.
- Must have intermediate computer skills.
