Service Technician

General Summary:

The Coop Service Technician is responsible for telephone, ADSL, VDSL and FTTP installations, repairs and replacements, installing switching and problem diagnoses to satisfy the members of the cooperative.

Essential Job Functions:

• Makes all types of single-line telephone, ADSL, VDSL and FTTP installations, including identifying correct cable pair/fiber in pedestal or on terminal block, installing and properly grounding drop and inside wiring; installs wall telephones with concealed wiring, plugs, jacks and extension bells.

• Locates trouble in single line telephone, ADSL, VDSL, and FTTP installations; repairs or replaces equipment/facilities at fault.

• Checks loops; records proper loop reading; uses test sets and interprets reading in the location line trouble; localizes line trouble; determines necessary repairs and changes cable pairs if required.

• Identifies color-coded cable pairs and or fiber optic; installs loading coils in ready-access enclosure or underground pedestal; installs and properly arranges inside wiring cable in key system terminal blocks.

• Assist central office staff in the installation of switching and related equipment when required.

• Repairs all trouble to cable/fiber plant, drop wire, station wiring and telephones; works with central office personnel to diagnose and repair trouble in carrier systems, voice frequently repeaters and related equipment.

• Maintains cable systems by testing to locate trouble, opening cable to repair or replace defective sections using splicing techniques; closing and sealing cable.

• Ties or terminates cable to protector devices and main distribution frame at central office; ties customer drop cable to central office cable system using splicing techniques and special equipment, such as multi-distribution stubs and terminal access boxes.

• Mounts demarcation devices such as NID’s and ONT’s with protectors at subscriber premises; attaches individual cable pairs to central office feeder cable/fiber optic facilities.

• Performs testing on completed splices or termination to insure dependable service.

• Performs work with the awareness of all potential hazards connected with the installation and maintenance of telephone system facilities, including but not limited to falls, electric shock, falling objects and traffic.

Uses safety equipment; utilizes safety practices; attends and participates in all designated cooperative safety and training meetings; abides by the company’s safety manual.

• Complies with all RUS specifications, industry standards, safety rules and regulations and company policies and procedures.

• Places a premium on customer satisfaction; makes every attempt to perpetuate PVT and its subsidiaries positive image in all customer related service activities.

Locates PVT facilities – copper, fiber optic and cable plant facilities in the PVT EAST 811 area, contacts and coordinates with outside contractors who are excavating in areas where PVT facilities are located. Works closely with PVT Engineers to ensure accurate maps and with 811 to ensure timely clearing or reporting for the 811 ticket system.

• Completes other duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of telecommunications equipment and materials; has good understanding of state and federal regulations and standards; familiar with computers; dealing effectively with customers in person or on the telephone; ability to listen to customer needs or complaints; communicates effectively orally; professional in all circumstances with the customers; good customer service skills; team player. Maintains a professional and cooperative relationship with all company personnel and the public; works closely with all Plant & Operations departmental personnel. Maintains close professional relationship with contractors and other service providers on all wireless projects; consults with manufactures, suppliers and vendors on wireless developments; perpetuates PVT and its subsidiaries positive image in all actions.

Education and/or Experience:

High School diploma or GED. Telecommunications training and/or experience required, plus a minimum of two years’ experience in telco plant operations and technical work. Facility locating experience. FTTP experience.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

Must have, or be able to obtain, and maintain a valid New Mexico state driver’s license, have an excellent driving record and be insurable under the Company’s insurance policy.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to elements such as noise, dust, cold/heat, wildlife, wind, rain, snow and traffic or interruptions. Some elements present which make conditions less desirable than usually found in an office. The normal noise level is quiet in the office environment and may be moderate to loud in outside conditions. Somewhat disagreeable working conditions due to the continuous exposure to one or more of the elements listed above. Exposed to one element continuously or several elements occasionally, but usually not at the same time.
