What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at QMF Steel?
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Estimator with expertise in reading and interpreting blueprints, performing takeoffs, and preparing accurate quotes in bid form. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in a fabrication shop for construction jobsites, with a strong understanding of Div 05 Miscellaneous metals (Ornamental and Architectural). This role requires the understanding of specifications and timelines.
QMF Steel is an AISC certified steel and stainless custom metal fabricator in Texas. We perform high profile products across the state.
This position is an addition to our staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Blueprint Analysis:
- Interpret and analyze blueprints, drawings, and specifications to understand project requirements related to miscellaneous metals (e.g., railings, stairs, platforms, structural elements)
- Material Takeoffs:
- Perform detailed material takeoffs to determine the types, quantities, and costs of materials required for each project using Blue Beam or similar
- Identify potential material substitutions or cost-saving opportunities
- Cost Estimation and Quoting:
- Prepare accurate and competitive quotes in bid form, considering materials, labor, equipment, and overhead
- Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to obtain pricing for materials and services
- Submit bids that are compliant with project specifications and company profitability goals
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with project managers, drafters, shop personnel and installers to confirm feasibility and accuracy of estimates
- Communicate with clients, contractors, and architects as needed to clarify project details or resolve discrepancies
- Project Documentation:
- Maintain organized records of all estimates, bids, and project-related documents
- Update cost databases and historical records to ensure the accuracy of future estimates
- Site and Shop Experience:
- Leverage experience in fabrication shops or construction sites to create practical and accurate estimates
- Visit job sites as needed to assess conditions and gather data for estimates
Qualifications and Skills:
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings/steel detailing and specifications
- Proficiency in takeoff software and/or estimating tools (e.g., Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Excel, ERP)
- Industry Knowledge:
- Familiarity with metals, fabrication processes and construction methods
- Knowledge of D1.1, AISC, AESS and other fabrication standards
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in estimating within a fabrication shop
- Hands-on experience with fabrication or construction processes
- Analytical Skills:
- Attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies in project documents/plans
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to offer innovative solutions
- Ability to determine complexity of the work
- Communication:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing bids and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders
- Organizational Skills:
- Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet strict deadlines using strong time-management skills
- Strong record keeping for bids that were performed 10-20 months prior to award
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards
- Certification or degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field
- Experience with ERP or job costing systems
