JOB DESCRIPTION: EVAS Insight Safety Engineer

An exciting and challenging opportunity to support NASA’s present and future human spaceflight programs at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas under the Safety and Mission Assurance Engineering Contract. This is an exciting time to be making history with the NASA Safety & Mission Assurance (S&MA) Engineering team assuring continuous human presence on the International Space Station and returning humans to the Moon and on to Mars, safely.

Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services (xEVAS) Insight Safety engineers are responsible for safety and mission assurance review and assessment of initial requirements, proposed designs, operations concepts, preliminary safety products, and certification of xEVAS end-item projects in support of NASA’s intended ISS, Gateway and Lunar exploration missions. These functions are performed in direct support of the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Directorate (NA), the NASA JSC Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP) Office , the xEVAS vendor Project Team, and the applicable support disciplines of the ISS, Gateway and Lunar program offices. xEVAS Insight Safety engineers are expected to become intimately familiar with the proposed requirements and operational scenarios associated with xEVAS Spacesuit activities for the ISS, Gateway vehicle, for the Lunar lander vehicle, and for Lunar surface habitation and operations. This will include assurance of preliminary safety requirements and hazard/risk assessments, and xEVAS Insight Safety engineers will be responsible for representing the safety position or informing the SMA Representative of the safety position at various SMA, EHP boards and panels. Extensive oral and written communications are expected to occur with multiple layers of SAIC and NASA management. xEVAS Insight Safety engineers are expected to function as an integral member of the NASA xEVAS Insight team, safety, and operations communities.

xEVAS Insight Safety engineers are required to complete a training/certification curriculum, and once certified, serve as mentor to other xEVAS Insight Safety or cross-training personnel during their on-the-job training. Cross-training opportunities may be available dependent on funding and resource availability. Example secondary certifications are in the following areas: EMU Safety, EVA Quality Engineering, xEVA Safety Operations, and GFE Safety. Currently, travel is expected to be at a minimum, but this is subject to change as Gateway and Lunar program expectations become more clearly defined.
