JOB DESCRIPTION: NASA EHP Integration Safety Engineer

 

Our team has an exciting and challenging opportunity to support NASA JSC Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP) Office. Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services (xEVAS) Integration Safety engineers are responsible for safety and mission assurance review and assessment of initial requirements, proposed designs, operations concepts, preliminary safety products, and certification of xEVAS end-item projects in support of NASA’s intended ISS, Gateway and Lunar exploration missions.  These functions are performed in direct support of the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Directorate (NA), the NASA JSC Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP) Office , the xEVAS vendor Project Team, and the applicable support disciplines of the ISS, Gateway and Lunar program offices.  xEVAS Integration Safety engineers are expected to become intimately familiar with the proposed requirements and operational scenarios associated with xEVAS Spacesuit activities for the ISS, Gateway vehicle, for the Lunar lander vehicle, and for Lunar surface habitation and operations.

This will include assurance of preliminary safety requirements and hazard/risk assessments, and xEVAS Integration Safety engineers will be responsible for representing the safety position or informing the SMA Representative of the safety position at various SMA, EHP boards and panels.  Extensive oral and written communications are expected to occur with multiple layers of SAIC and NASA management.  xEVAS Integration Safety engineers are expected to function as an integral member of the NASA xEVAS Integration team, safety, and operations communities. 

xEVAS Integration Safetyengineers are required to complete a training/certification curriculum, and once certified, serve as mentor to other xEVAS IntegrationSafety or cross-training personnel during their on-the-job training. Cross-training opportunities may be available dependent on funding and resource availability. Example secondary certifications are in the following areas: EMU Safety, EVA Quality Engineering, xEVA Safety Operations, and GFE Safety. Currently, travel is expected to be at a minimum, but this is subject to change as Gateway and Lunar program expectations become more clearly defined.

 

REQUIREMENTS: NASA EHP Integration Safety Engineer
   
Education: Bachelors of Science in Engineering (Mechanical or Aerospace preferred) or STEM degree (hard science such as math or physics preferred)
    
Year(s) of Experience: 5 years of experience working with NASA flight hardware or operations

Minimum Citizenship: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
    
Required Skills and Traits:
    
  • Development of Safety or Reliability related products such as hazard reports, FMEAs, and Fault Trees.
  • Familiar with NASA, DOD, or other industry safety, reliability, and quality processes.
  • Must possess excellent oral or written skills.
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter, self-motivated.
  • Experience supporting real-time EVA/EMU operations, ground testing, and/or crew training.
  • Ability to master SMA and Engineering processes for the certification of EMU and EVA tools/equipment.
  • Must be willing to travel (< 5%, domestic).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be able to successful on a Government Background check to receive a Public Trust clearance

Other Desired Skills:
 
  • Working knowledge of International Space Station (ISS) hardware, airlock/EMU systems, their interaction, and their operations.
  • Experience in the development of spacesuit systems, other critical space hardware, or procedures and flight rules for spacesuit system operations.
  • Experience in complex programs related to Manned Space Flight at NASA.
  • Proficient at independent study and data gathering.
  • Experience in environmental control and life support, thermal control or structural and mechanical systems engineering.
  • Familiar with human factors and medical-related conditions as they apply to EMU design and operations.
  • Experience with real-time CORE room or MER/MCC support of EVA/EMU operations.
