Teacher’s Assistant Job Description
NATURE OF WORK:
TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)
- Helps Teachers with lesson preparation, including collecting materials and setting up equipment
- Assists in leading lessons with students on a one-on-one basis or in small groups
- Supervising students in class, between classes, and during recreation periods and field trips
- Tracks attendance,
- Observes developmental milestones and sharing with the Teacher
- Gives extra help to students who need special accommodations or are struggling with a concept
- Assists students with special learning requirements, including disabilities
- Collaborates with the Teacher to identify students’ issues and recommend solutions
- Ensures that Quality First ERS, CLASS, and licensing standards are being followed
- Ensures licensing requirements are met by following cleaning routines in the classroom, as well as ensuring that all activity areas are open and available during the school day
- Participates in weekly planning/update meetings with Teachers
- Assists students with personal hygiene needs while teaching personal hygiene skills, including diapering and toileting
- Ensures the health and safety of each child in the class, including adjusting the level of attention needed depending on the child's behavioral needs
- Completes other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of:
- Support services available for individuals with disabilities;
- Direct support provision;
- Client needs and routines;
Working knowledge of:
- principles and practices of service provision and program management;
- standard office practices, procedures, and equipment;
- medical terminology relating to specific disabilities;
- business English, spelling, and report writing.
Skill in:
- evaluating program performance and identifying appropriate remedial actions;
- leadership and support of direct care staff;
- effective verbal and written communication.
Ability to:
- comply with rules, policies, and standards of care;
- maintain positive working relationships with clients, coworkers, supervisors, and service providers;
- effectively communicate with persons with a range of disabilities;
- create and maintain files and records;
- follow written and verbal instructions;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be able to obtain a fingerprint clearance card prior to starting work
- Can provide documentation of one of the following:
- Current and continuous enrollment in high school or a high school equivalency class;
- High school or high school equivalency diploma;
- Enrollment in vocational rehabilitation, as defined in A.R.S. § 23-501;
- Employment as a teacher-caregiver aide for 12 months; or
- Service as a volunteer in a child care facility for 12 months;
