Job Description
As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer - Power Systems, you will be responsible for executing design projects from start to finish in compliance with industry and company standard practices and procedures. You will provide technical and sales support to design complex and large power systems, relay upgrades and modifications, and life-extension and projects. You will also complete power systems studies including arc flash studies, short circuit analysis, load flow analysis, and grounding and lightning protection studies.
Responsibilities
- Design medium and low voltage electrical systems consisting of outdoor substations, unit substations, power transformers, protection and control schemes, power monitoring, circuit breaker replacements, relay replacements, brownfield and greenfield EPC projects.
- Develop specifications for medium and low voltage electrical equipment.
- Work with CAD staff to develop and/or update client electrical drawings including one lines, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
- Review field data and perform coordination, short circuit, and arc flash studies.
- Review power monitoring data to provide customer recommendations.
- Represent Qualus as a sales representative during customer site walks.
- Lead interaction with other functions and locations to determine optimum solutions.
- Remain current on all safety and technical training.
- Adhere to all company, industry, and client safety protocols and standards.
- Assess project-specific resource needs and coordinate assignments with project managers.
- Communicate core technical job requirements.
- Support immediate supervisors on planning and organizing workload to ensure the most effective return on assets.
- Coordinate proper project hand-off between sales and operations/engineering.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings to discuss work scope, project specifications, budgets, schedules, and safety requirements with project teams.
- Effectively communicate with other departments to ensure activities are properly coordinated.
- Ensure timely and accurate invoicing for all engineering projects by providing all necessary paperwork.
Required Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you must have:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Professional Engineering (P.E.) License preferred.
- 5 years of design engineering experience on primary power distribution, P&C schemes, and/or electrical equipment.
- Experience developing relay protective setpoints and settings files.
- Working knowledge of NEC/NFPA 70, ANSI C57, ANSI C37, and NESC, and other applicable codes and standards in the design of substations and industrial power distribution.
- 2-5 years of AutoCAD experience.
- 2-5 years using power systems modeling software such as ETAP, SKM, and/or EasyPower.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively discuss technical recommendations with customers.
- Ability to work independently, accurately, and with high attention to detail.
Salary and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $180,000 per year, depending on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) matching, and paid time off.
