Location:
The ideal candidate will be available to work three days a week at QIC offices in Orlando, FL (two days from home).

QIC is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the development of cutting-edge digital solutions that improve human performance and training outcomes. In this senior-level role, you'll provide technical leadership across multiple projects—including mobile apps, interactive learning modules, and simulations—while mentoring a cross-functional team of developers, designers, and analysts. You’ll architect solutions, drive quality and innovation, and help shape the future of our technical roadmap. This is a hands-on position ideal for someone who thrives in both code and collaboration.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a cross-functional team of software developers, UX/UI designers, and business analysts throughout the software development lifecycle to ensure the successful delivery of innovative, high-quality solutions—including mobile applications, interactive learning modules, simulations, and other digital tools.
- Architect, design, develop, and maintain robust and scalable software applications and systems, with an emphasis on frameworks such as Drupal and modern backend technologies.
- Develop backend services and modules, including APIs and database integrations, optimized for performance and designed to be consumed by mobile and web applications.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define software requirements, translate business needs into technical solutions, and ensure alignment with user experience, performance, and security standards.
- Provide technical direction and strategic input for new initiatives and existing projects, ensuring alignment with architectural standards, scalability goals, and delivery timelines.
- Conduct code reviews, enforce best practices, and promote a culture of continuous improvement, quality assurance, and knowledge sharing across the engineering team.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and evaluate their potential to enhance project outcomes or improve development efficiency—particularly in areas such as content management, simulation engines, and learning technologies.
- Familiarity with Drupal is strongly preferred, as it is an integral part of our diverse and evolving project portfolio.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- Familiarity with API integration, third-party libraries, and web services
- At least five years developing mobile applications
- Strong understanding of debugging, QA, and code optimization techniques
- Motivated, outgoing, friendly, team player
- Exceptional communication skills
- Open to cross-training in other engineering-related areas
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in Computer Science or related field
- 5 years of Drupal experience
- Proficient in Drupal architecture and best practices
- Strong backend development and DevOps background
- Experience with IaC tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet)
- Skilled with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Expertise in CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, CircleCI)
- Familiar with Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with monitoring/logging tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
- Knowledge of caching and performance tuning
- Understanding of microservices and serverless architecture
- Exposure to IoT and game development a plus
Work Environment:
The majority (90%) of this position is situated in a typical office environment and includes the use of a computer (6-8 hours per day), telephone, and web-based video communications. While not regularly anticipated, the remaining 10% of time may include activities at customer sites such as military installations and other commercial, industrial or office settings. Working in any field environment, you may be exposed to the elements (hot or cold temperatures, sun, wind, snow, rain, etc.). Activities required will include traveling (flying or driving) for long periods, walking, standing, or sitting for long durations (6-8 hours), crouching, kneeling, and carrying equipment. You may be required to wear additional safety equipment, including but not limited to a helmet, eye and ear protection, safety vest, and steel-toed boots.
Travel:
The Software Engineer may travel up to 10% of working hours per month for the following purposes:
- Data collection support
- Conference presentations and attendance
