The Michigan State Bar Foundation (MSBF) is looking for an experienced Program Officer / Director of Grants to lead its grantmaking strategy, implement equitable and efficient grant practices, and oversee community-focused grant programs. This leadership role reports directly to the Executive Director and plays a key part in driving MSBF’s mission of increasing access to justice and supporting vital civil legal aid initiatives in Michigan.


About MSBF

Founded in 1947, the Michigan State Bar Foundation (MSBF) is dedicated to advancing access to justice by funding civil legal aid programs and promoting public understanding of the legal system. With over $210 million granted to date, MSBF supports essential services for low-income individuals, helping to handle around 50,000 cases annually across Michigan. The Foundation also supports programs that improve the administration of justice by educating children and adults about their legal rights and responsibilities, the justice system, and opportunities to resolve conflicts outside the courtroom.

Key Responsibilities

Grant Strategy and Planning

  • Design and execute a comprehensive grant strategy that aligns with MSBF’s mission, advancing justice and support for underserved communities.
  • Set and manage grant priorities, ensuring equity and best practices across program operations.
  • Partner with grantees to facilitate fair, inclusive, and community-responsive grantmaking processes.


Grant Management and Compliance

  • Oversee the full grant lifecycle, from initial inquiry to post-award evaluation.
  • Ensure compliance with grant agreements, reporting requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Partner with leadership to evaluate and improve grant delivery models and increase grantee capacity.
  • Collaborate with leadership to assess and enhance legal service delivery models, focusing on innovative solutions and improving state justice initiatives.
  • Provide technical assistance to grantees and maintain accurate records and data integrity.


Leadership and Collaboration

  • Act as a key member of the Leadership Team, promoting cohesion in grant management and reporting practices.
  • Identify and encourage training opportunities for professional growth within grants management.
  • Facilitate collaboration across departments to align grant activities with the organization’s goals.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field; advanced studies are preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience in foundation grant management, nonprofit administration, or philanthropy.
  • Expertise in project management, compliance, and data management within a nonprofit setting.
  • Proficient in grant management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
