Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director, Biohazard Radiation and Chemical Safety (Associate Director), the Safety Technician (Radiation and Chemical Safety) will be responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of the radiation safety program and the chemical laboratory safety program in accordance with applicable legislation, standards, and University policies and procedures, primarily in laboratories that do not have biohazards.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Perform inspections in ionizing radiation, laser, and x-ray facilities to ensure that the facility and the use of radioactive materials or equipment conforms to established standards, policies and procedures. This would include preparing inspection reports and making recommendations to correct noted deficiencies.
- Assist in providing advice to the University community on radiation safety matters.
- Assist in maintaining the records related to the radiation safety program (inspection reports, permits, authorized personnel list, orders, training records, and general correspondence) in the established filing system within the Department of Environmental Health & Safety.
- Under the direction of the Associate Director investigate complaints regarding violations of the relevant radiation, x-ray, and laser standards.
- Assist the Associate Director in the creation of manuals, standards and guidelines to ensure the radiation safety program for ionizing radiation, laser, and x-ray meets the requirements of the applicable legislation and the conditions of the University’s Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) consolidated license.
- Perform inspections in laboratories and locations where chemical hazards are used to ensure that the facility and use of chemicals conforms to established standards, policies, and procedures. This would include preparing inspection reports and making recommendations to correct noted deficiencies.
- Assist in providing advice to the University community on laboratory safety matters.
- Assist in maintaining the records related to the chemical laboratory safety program (inspection reports, general correspondence, training, etc) in the established filing system within the Department of Environmental Health & Safety.
- Under the direction of the Associate Director, investigate complaints regarding violations of the relevant legislation standards and guidelines.
- Assist the Associate Director in the creation of manuals, standards, and guidelines to ensure the chemical laboratory safety program meets the requirement of the applicable legislation.
- Serve as an active member of the university's HAZMAT team.
- Assist other departmental staff and undertake additional duties as assigned to support the department's operations.
- A three-year Chemical Technology diploma with a minimum of two years of experience using hazardous chemicals in a laboratory setting. The ideal candidate will also have experience using radioactive material in a laboratory setting.
- Familiarity with CNSC legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Legislation, and CSA and ANSI Standards is required.
- The incumbent must complete Radiation Safety, Laser Safety, X-Ray Safety and WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods training
- Good working knowledge of computers for word processing, spreadsheet management, e-mail, and database management.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
- A valid driver’s license is required, and the incumbent must be insurable under the University Insurance Policy by demonstrating a clean driving record.
