Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaii’s largest locally owned and operated medical testing laboratory. DLS is considered a leader in the Hawaii, Guam and Saipan communities we serve. As an integral part of the patient care team, DLS uses state of the art testing and value-based informatics to promote optimal patient care and positively impact patient outcomes.

SCHEDULE

Regular Full-Time Position

Must be available Sunday to Saturday 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm to include holidays.

Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs the day to day supervision of staff and routine operations for assigned area, under the direction of supervisor.

Assists supervisor with activities to support the company mission, vision, and strategic goals.

Represents management and the company.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists supervisor to ensure operations of assigned area(s) meet company requirements and customer service goals.

1.1 Assists supervisor in setting departmental standards of quality, productivity, performance and developing and implementing monitoring systems, as assigned.

1.2 Performs scheduling and work assignments according to operational requirements.

1.3 Participates in preparation and updating of procedures and other departmental manuals.

1.4 Communicates relevant information to team members, supervisor, other appropriate people in a timely and appropriate manner.

1.5 Investigates and addresses incidents involving patients, employees, clients, visitors.

1.5.1 Handles situation using appropriate company policy or procedure.

1.5.2 Consults immediate supervisor or other appropriate resource.

1.6 Ensures the proper and efficient use of supplies and equipment.

Assists supervisor to ensure assigned area(s) meet State, Federal, and other regulatory requirements.

2.1 May implement and maintain quality control/assurance programs as required.

Assists in implementing plans within scope of responsibility to meet organization's strategy.

Participates in hiring, training, developing and appraising staff and makes recommendations as appropriate.

4.1 Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis in accordance with company policy.

4.2 Consults with immediate supervisor and Human Resources as appropriate.

Performs competency assessments for assigned staff.

Keeps abreast of changes in industry, makes recommendations, and assists with implementation of new or revised procedures.

Provides input and support for the development and implementation of improvements.

7.1 Identifies opportunities for improvements.

7.2 Provides appropriate data and information needed to make decisions.

7.3 Recommends solutions.

7.4 Assists with implementation.

Collects QA data as assigned and assists with evaluation of statistics.

Participates, leads, and facilitates meetings and teams.

Performs duties of Lab Assistant I/II (Phlebotomist) as needed.

Prepares reports and documents for immediate supervisor and other relevant people, as assigned.

Develops, promotes, and maintains a positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Ensures working environment that provides maximum safety and health and encourages safety awareness among employees.

13.1 Ensures that employees performs duties using safe work techniques and procedures in accordance with OSHA/State/Federal regulations and DLS policies and procedures.

13.2 Reports unsafe work conditions, injuries/illnesses, and incidents in a timely and proper manner.

Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s).

Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc.

Maintains attendance as scheduled/assigned, consistent with DLS policies and procedures.

Participates in continuing education/in-service programs and in management and laboratory administration related courses.

Models the behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, and shared values of the organization.

Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Satellites and Hospital:

20.1 Provides coverage for shift(s)/site(s) with varying start and end times as necessary.

20.2 Maintains employee files with attendance and performance logs, and other required documentation.

20.3 Satellites: Conducts weekly visits to assigned sites and maintains appropriate documentation.

Performs other duties as required.

JOB DEMANDS

Communication Demands:

Able to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations, as appropriate.

Able to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

Able to speak effectively before groups of internal and external customers.

Typical Physical Demands:               

Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities.

Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

Requires clear vision at 20 inches or less and ability to identify and distinguish colors.

Requires corrected hearing to normal range.

Requires ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to lab coats, gloves, face shields.

Performs occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of supplies weighing up to 35 pounds.

Performs the following activities on a continual or intermittent basis:

Standing, sitting or walking up to 4 hours

Typing/keying up to 4 hours

Bending up to 2 hours

May require frequent walking and/or driving to various locations.

Typical Working Conditions:             

Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials possible.

Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:            

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Academic background with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred.

Experience:         

Two years patient care, medical laboratory or equivalent public contact experience required.

Trainer: Minimum of one (1) year phlebotomy experience at DLS required.

Certification:        

Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) , American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), (American Medical Technologist (AMT) or California State License (CPT I and CPT II) is preferred.

Skills:    

Ability to communicate effectively in English both in verbal and written form.

Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.

Excellent customer service skills.

Effective coaching skills.

Basic ability to operate personal computer. (Ex: turn on/off, open/close applications, use mouse & keyboard)

Other Qualifications (as applicable):

Must possess a valid State of Hawaii (or equivalent) motor vehicle license and a current acceptable traffic abstract.
