Excavation Foreman Position Overview
The Excavation Foreman must demonstrate a strong work ethic, leadership skills, effective communication Skills, and the ability to resolve disputes among workers while ensuring safe and efficient operations on projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety
- Ensure the safety of the work site by enforcing safety policies and procedures, conducting safety briefings, and ensuring crew members have the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Specific emphasis on jobsite housekeeping, safe use of machinery, equipment and tools.
- Provide appropriate training regarding safe work procedures, PPE, hand tool use, equipment, etc.
- Ensure all PPE is available and onsite, readily available and in good working condition prior to safety sensitive tasks.
- Adhere to all state and federal regulations, if applicable, as set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), or any other regulatory agency.
- Conduct daily safety briefings and ensure compliance with PPE and job site hazard protocols.
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with excavation and heavy equipment operations.
- Investigate and report accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
Skills
- Foremen should possess a high level of knowledge of the following items:
- The ability to fluently read and understand project plans.
- A strong understanding of elevations and grades.
- Essential understanding of industry excavation standards, along with the ability to execute tasks safely and efficiently.

Supervision
- Supervise and manage a crew of workers, assign tasks, and ensure work is completed safely on time and to specifications.
- Delegating individual roles and responsibilities to crew members and subcontractors while ensuring each crew member has clear instructions in the goal of each project, and the knowledge to complete the task requested safely.
- Training, Supervision and Mentoring of employees and subcontractors.
- Coordinate with project managers, inspectors, and engineers to maintain efficiency.
Scheduling and Time Management
- Planning and preparing the work site, including ensuring all materials, permits and equipment are available and in good working condition.
- Maintain schedules by coordinating daily tasks, and make changes as necessary due to weather, supply, deliveries and personnel.
- Scheduling and coordinating manpower, assets, deliveries, and any other appropriate resources effectively, efficiently and safely.
Quality Control
- Inspect and work with crews to ensure quality standards are achieved to customers' expectations and industry standards.
- Ensure proper alignment, slope, bedding and connections before backfilling.
- Perform pressure and leak tests as required by project specifications.
- Maintain a high level of workmanship while meeting or exceeding safety and quality standards.
Documentation & Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate records of daily activities, equipment/materials used, and labor hours.
- Maintain accurate field book, including measurement of all installed materials.
- Maintain Daily Job Report of all daily production values, material and equipment use, and subcontractor production.
- Document field modifications and ensure compliance with permits and regulatory documentation.
Communication
- Communicating project progress, schedules, challenges, etc. to Management in a clear and concise manner.
- Regularly reporting project status to Supervisors, Site Engineers, and other officials.
- The ability to resolve conflicts professionally and efficiently to promote compliance and jobsite harmony.
Equipment Maintenance
- Responsible for overseeing the proper use and maintenance of company equipment and small tools and rectify/report any concerns to the maintenance team and schedule equipment downtime effectively.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Display a positive, professional and courteous attitude towards co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Report to assigned job site in proper attire and be ready to begin work at the designated start time. Strict adherence to safety requirements and the procedures as outlined in the Safety Manual.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required and requested.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and company property.
- Be a positive role model and mentor to crew members.
Education/Experience Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of excavation or site work experience, supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of excavation safety, equipment operation, and grading techniques.
- Ability to fluently read blueprints, project plans, and specifications.
- Willingness to continue education, obtain applicable licenses and possess a strong desire to stay up to date on current industry standards and product specifications.
General Requirements:
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
- Ability to lift 75 lbs. and work in all conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
