Job Description:
Conducts individual and group counseling to meet treatment plan goals and objectives. Produce a clear and concise documentation in all areas including, but not limited to: completing initial and updating PCP’s, weekly clinical review, staffing notes, transition and discharge planning. Responsible for appropriate referral for each patient in need, open clear and ethical communication with referral sources; follow up of each of case after discharge. Motivates patients for changes, effectively performs crisis interventions, screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling (group & individual.) Appropriately and professionally provides case management, patient education and keep clear, ethical and confidential reports and record keeping. Interacts and relates with peers and other professionals to assure comprehensive and quality care for clients.
Responsibilities of the Substance Abuse Counselor:
- Assists clients in group activities related to developing skills necessary to maintain long-term recovery from substance use. Manages the flow of group and the interaction of clients in the group.
- Successfully create a positive atmosphere and a safe space for open discussion for clients recovering from drug and alcohol addictions.
- Deliver, in coordination with the Treatment Team, ongoing cognitive-behavioral group facilitation in the areas of substance abuse, life skills training, and pro-social cognitive behavioral change. The program manual reflects evidence-based practices that permit new members to join frequently (open-cycle). Facilitation must support both effective intervention and a robust treatment culture.
- Provide support to all program participants in a way that reflects the dignity and worth of every individual as well as the common risks associated with justice-involved populations.
- Implement evidence-based practices (EBP) with fidelity to positively impact criminogenic risks and needs of RCCG participants. Implement data-driven strategies and techniques for ongoing practice improvement.
- Facilitate Pre-Employment & Recovery group workshops.
- Communicate efficiently and effectively with clients, RCCG staff and community referral sources.
- Provide associated case management duties for clients assigned to the group or other RCCG clients as needed.
- Follow up with progress notes on a regular basis in accordance with RCCG standards, definitions, protocols, and policies. Conduct timely, accurate, and complete documentation reflecting services rendered and progress toward both court-mandated and mutually identified client goals. Provide clients with information regarding supplemental services within the career centers and referrals to community resources beyond the scope of the agency.
- Communicate client/group/agency issues and/or concerns to the Program Director in a timely manner.
- Evaluate the individual and family systems as well as assess client’s functioning within work, family and routines of daily living and identifies areas needing continued support, resources, and treatment to assist clients.
- Develop, implement, and maintain partnerships with other community providers.

Education Required:
- High School Diploma
Certification Required
- CADC, CADC-R
- MUST BE registered with the NCSAPPB
Experience Required:
- Direct service or experience in the substance abuse field
- Minimum of two years work experience in the substance abuse field
- Group treatment in the substance abuse field
Skills Required:
- Ability to think strategically and use sound judgment when making decisions
- Awareness and daily practice of Best Practices, HIPAA, OSHA, federal, and state rules and regulations regarding confidentiality and clients’ rights
- Clear understanding of a multi-disciplinary approach designed to support the whole person, increase public safety, and reduce recidivism Ability to articulate mission and vision of agency to staff and community in the interest of new business
- Demonstrate strong leadership qualities
- Behave in a manner promoting honesty, respect, and courtesy within the organization and in the community
