Summary/Objective
An Accounting Assistant at a financial institution is responsible for overseeing the accuracy and timeliness of standard accounting functions, including recording transactions, reconciling accounts, processing accounts payable, wires transfers, financial reports, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Essential Functions

- Prepares accurate account reconciliations of the credit unions financial statements such as cash, investments, loans, deposits, fixed assets, prepaids and accrued liabilities, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
- Process accounts payable invoices in a timely manner for approval and payment.
- Assists in the month-end process, including journal entry preparation, accrual calculations, and ensuring timely completion of all necessary tasks.
- Post participation payments to the corresponding general ledger account for all participation loans.
- Process incoming and outgoing wire transfers in accordance with policy and procedures.
- Assist with balancing and posting daily entries, researching any problems.
- Process correspondent account entries with other financial institutions.
- Monitor and improve accounting processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Process payroll, benefits and tax entries into the core systems.
- Assist with gathering information for internal and external auditors, preparing necessary schedules and documentation to facilitate smooth audit processes.
- Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and mitigate financial risks.
- Verify and process documents for record retention.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards (GAAP, IFRS) and regulatory requirements, including preparing necessary reports for regulatory agencies.
- Assist in departmental projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights and support business decisions.
- Assist the Accounting Department in other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to spend considerable time sitting at a desk, completing work using a computer, regularly answers phone calls and interacts with employees at all levels of the organization. The employee will occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.
Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time salaried position that generally works 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday. The Accounting Department typically operates from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, start times can stagger based on job related requirements.
Travel
Less than 10% travel is anticipated for this position other than some local travel in the Quad City area.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum of an associate degree in accounting or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a financial institution.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Fiserv Prologue, JHA, Sage) and Microsoft Office Suite.
