What are the responsibilities and job description for the Yard Hostler position at R+L Global?
Yard Hostler responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Drives yard tractor to move trailers and containers located on company premises
- Assist the warehouse team with all warehouse operations
- Assist in all operations involving containers/trailers on company promises
- Pulling out and backing trailers into the dock
- Hooking and unhooking of trailers, raising and lowering landing gear
- Pulling out and backing trailers into the dock
- Pre and post trip inspections of tractor, trailers and switch gears; completes and maintains Daily vehicles inspection report
- Checks wheels of trailers/containers after placement at dock doors
- Reads manifests or follows oral instructions to ascertain freight to be moved. Opens trailers
- Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets by hand
- Loads materials into vehicles and installs bracing, rope, or dunnage to prevent shifting or damage in transit
- Counts, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on control copy and manifest
- Practices safe driving and good yard housekeeping; perform daily yard check
- Operation of fork lift and/or pallet jack; perform required safety checks
- Loading and unloading of inbound and outbound freight; Receiving, stocking, pulling, staging of freight
- Inspection of freight ensuring it matches bill of lading, checking any physical damages, record shortages and/or overages
- Ensure warehouse security, cleanliness and safety standards are adhered to
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid State Driver’s License required
- Previous Yard Hostler in a fast-paced environment preferred
- Fork Lift Certification and/or ability to obtain certification required
- Ability to operate a forklift safely and efficiently, maintaining required forklift certification
- Previous radio frequency picking systems (RF), bar code systems and electronic data interchange (EDI) preferred
- Previous Cargowise One warehouse management systems (WMS) preferred
- Ability to read bill of lading/manifest and understand basic warehousing, inventory and shipping procedures
- Ability to work in a fast paced, ever-changing environment
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects, some weighing up to 75 lbs
- Knowledge of trailer loading procedures and OSHA requirements in a warehouse environment
- Knowledge of hazardous material loading requirements and restrictions
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently; bi-lingual Spanish a plus
