Job Description Summary:
The Civil Construction Layout Technician will be responsible for interpreting plans, blueprints and working drawings to physically mark out and document the locations, dimensions, and elevations of structures and components on a construction site. Utilizing surveying instruments and techniques to ensure accurate placement of elements like foundations, bridges, walls, and utilities, and may also assist in quality control and documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide initial layout and continual field verification of work points and grade lines for all aspects of civil construction projects including but not limited to bridges, soil support structures, bearing piles, drilled shafts, drainage structures, curb, guardrail, fine grading, paving and pavement markings etc.
- Understand and translate architectural, structural, and civil engineering plans into physical measurements on the ground.
- Utilize surveying equipment (i.e. robotic and conventional total stations, GPS rovers and base stations, transit levels, laser levels and theodolites) to accurately mark locations and elevations for all construction elements.
- Measure distances, elevations, and angles, and marking them with stakes, paint, or other methods.
- Supervise roadway fine grading operations to ensure accurate line and grade of aggregate placements prior to paving. This shall include final roadway striping, curbing and guardrail layout as well.
- Creating and maintaining "as-built" drawings.
- Working closely with engineers, and construction crews to ensure accurate layout and proper execution of the project ensuring that construction work has been installed and located accurately.
- Monitor field activities and provide field support to craftsmen during planning and construction activities.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficient in using surveying instruments and techniques.
- Strong math and geometry skills for accurate calculations and measurements.
- Strong problem-solving abilities. Able to identify and assist in resolving layout or potential design related issues.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other construction professionals in an often aggressive, goal-oriented team atmosphere.
- Ability to work in a professional office environment as well as on active construction sites. Willingness to work in all weather, often at heights or in adverse conditions.
- Experience establishing grade, laying out drainage structures and pipes, reestablishing and maintaining bridge construction working points and grade lines and for major infrastructure projects.
- Able to maintain accurate field notes, sketches, and data logs, ensuring quality control.
- Looking for an independent, self-motivated, detail orientated and organized individual.
- Always demonstrates professionalism, while interacting with state agencies, project owner’s or their representatives, subcontractors, vendors, other construction workers and the traveling public.
- Demonstrate ability to work within and adapt to a quickly changing work environment with the ability to multitask several different tasks and project sites simultaneously.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications with advanced knowledge of Excel.
- Proficient in the use of GPS layout technologies, Trimble experience preferred.
Education and Training:
- Associate's degree in civil engineering technology or related field experience is preferred.
- 3-5 years of heavy construction survey experience.
- Knowledge of how to properly use and maintain survey equipment.
- Professional Land Surveyor license a plus,
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to lift/carry up to 50lbs while navigating challenging terrain as needed.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean record.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $52,859.08 - $63,658.25 per year
