The County Highway Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of a wide variety of county-owned vehicles and equipment used in road construction, maintenance, and other public works operations. This position ensures that all machinery, trucks, and other highway-related vehicles are in optimal working condition to support the efficient and safe functioning of the county’s infrastructure services
Receives supervision from the Shops Operations Manager and Shop Foreman
- Repair and maintain county highway vehicles and equipment
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Diagnose, repair and adjust hydraulic and air brake systems.
- Operate machine shop tools and equipment such as electric and gas welders, cutting torch, press and other various mechanic tools.
- Test machinery and equipment for safety and proper operation.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records for all county-owned equipment and vehicles.
- Determine and request needed parts, supplies, and materials.
- Move, load and transport equipment from job site to repair facilities.
- Fabrication work and the repair of snowplows and truck structural components, etc.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and assist with road maintenance or snow removal operations as needed
Receives supervision from the Shops Operations Manager and Shop Foreman
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must have three (3) years' experience (minimum) in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty diesel trucks (preferred), automobiles, and diesel-powered equipment including electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Experience in welding and fabrication on heavy duty truck and machinery components.
- Knowledge of safety standards, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred).
- Prompt and regular attendance.
- Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods and practices used in the mechanic and fabrication trade.
- Ability to use and operate a welder.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
- Physical Requirements
- Continuous (67-100% of workday) standing, bending/twisting, reaching, feeling, hearing, use of far and near vision, light intensity pushing/pulling of objects weighing 10 pounds or less.
- Frequent (34-66% of workday) walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing using legs, feet and arms for support, medium intensity lifting of objects weighing 20-40 pounds, light intensity carrying of objects weighing 10 pounds or less.
- Occasional (1-33% of workday) sitting, crawling, ascending and descending ladders while carrying objects, balancing, talking, high intensity lifting and carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more, pushing/pulling and fingering.
- Lifting over 51 pounds requires assistance. Assistance means the use of levers, work machines, another person, etc.

- Frequent (34-66% of workday) exposure to wet environment and noxious odors.
- Occasional (1-33% of workday) exposure to the outside with no protection from weather, extreme heat or cold, temperature changes, humid environment, noise, vibrations, electrical, chemical, burns, radiation, fast moving vehicles, fumes, dust, poor ventilation, and physically confined worksite.
- Equipment Used Technical equipment such as: measuring devices, computers, hand tools, power tools, shovels/brooms, jacks and hoists; transportation vehicles such as an automobile or 35,000 GVW truck, torches, welding equipment, grinders, crane, hearing and eye protection, other personal protective equipment and 2-way radio.
