Job Description for Personnel Manager
The Racine Symphony Orchestra (RSO) is the third oldest orchestra in the State of Wisconsin, primarily serving the Racine County community. It is a professional orchestra composed of musicians mainly from Southeast Wisconsin.
Position Summary - Personnel Manager
The Personnel Manager (PM) reports to the Executive Director (ED) and is responsible and accountable for all aspects of orchestra personnel.
· The PM researches, locates, and hires personnel.
· The PM handles all aspects of engagement of musicians; including communication with musicians, rehearsal and performance schedules, management of rehearsals, dealing with personnel issues that arise in rehearsal, and collecting any necessary documentation from musicians.
· The PM is RSO’s primary liaison with the musicians of the orchestra, collectively and individually.
· The PM communicates the calendar to the musicians and does so in a timely fashion - for example, in the spring for the following season.
Please note: The RSO does not have a collective bargaining agreement, but does adhere to a majority of the normal terms found in such an agreement, i.e. service length of 2.5 hours for rehearsal, three-hours for concerts, compensation pertaining to travel stipends, overtime, cartage, doubling, etc. The RSO, as of October 2023, falls under the jurisdiction the A.F.of M. Local 8.
Responsibilities of the Orchestra Manager include, but are not limited to:
Concert Production:
· The PM coordinates with the Production Manager any necessary stage requirements, and other logistical arrangements as they relate to personnel.
· Coordinates with Music Librarian.
· Attends all rehearsals and performances, taking attendance of the orchestra, managing breaks, service length, communication with the musicians, as needed.
· Arrive 45 minutes prior to start of the service
Artistic Administration:
· Consult with the Artistic/Music Director on the needed numbers of musicians required for each concert production, guest personnel, etc.
· Oversee and manage all auditions, including facilitation of music excerpt selection with relevant stakeholders
Orchestra Personnel:
· For each orchestra instrument, maintain an up-to-date list containing the names of prospective substitute players; consult with the orchestra principals and the Artistic/Music Director on the ranking of substitute players.
· Hire all musicians.
· Manage seating of the sections in consultation with Section Principals and, when necessary, the Artistic Director.
· Maintain attendance records for all rehearsals and performances, discussing issues that arise with Section Principals, and, when necessary, the Artistic Director.
· Communicate standard scale for "guests" and "subs," adhering to fair practices in hiring.
Qualifications:
· Knowledge of orchestral and classical music required.
· Experience performing in a professional/semi-professional orchestra required.
· Related experience in managing orchestral, performing arts or personnel.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Proficiency in the use of computers for all types of communication, as well as Microsoft Office suite of software.
· Attention to detail with ability to multi-task and execute plans effectively in a fast-paced environment.
· Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage under pressure and with competing priorities.
· Successful track record of managing interpersonal conflicts required.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $4,000.00 - $6,000.00 per year
