Position Summary :
The purpose of the Safety Support Staff position is to provide support to a diverse population of students focused on promoting school safety and positively impacting school culture and climate. Developing and maintaining healthy relationships with students and school staff are vital to one's individual success in this position. Primary responsibilities include consistently monitoring assigned areas for any security risks or concerns, ensuring a safe environment for students and staff alike, and supporting the academic goals of students. This may include related venues during school hours and extracurricular activities, functions, and events. Must be able to proactively patrol / manage / maintain assigned areas during designated times with little or no direct supervision or oversight. Must also be able to support entrance procedures as it pertains to the assigned school and its needs.
Essential Functions :
Monitoring and controlling access points to the building or specific areas within the building
Performing routine patrols of the building to identify and address any security risks or concerns and documenting such findings
Conducting and assisting with daily safety procedures by use of on-site safety equipment
Assisting with and communicating about any emergencies with necessary building staff
Collaborating effectively with other staff such as building maintenance, administration, and support staff when situations arise
Resolving conflicts proactively and, when necessary, intervening with the use of physical de escalation strategies as well
Assisting with crowd control during events, emergencies, or other activities held in buildings to ensure the safety of all occupants
Maintaining the confidentiality of staff and student information
Effectively communicating in high-stress situations with the ability to remain calm and professional
Consistently documenting all incidents that occur during the designated work time
Actively support the RUSD strategic planning goals
Complete other duties as assigned
Work Environment :
- School work environment as it relates to this position and its essential functions
- May be required to work additional hours as needed in critical situations
- May be required to travel to different locations within the area supported by RUSD
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Employees will be trained in ALiCE, CSTAG, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Youth Mental Health First Aid, Trauma Sensitive Schools applications, safety equipment operations, restorative practices, and other training deemed necessary.
Ability to work well under direction from two or more supervisors (school and / or district levels).
Strong knowledge of the strengths, needs, and concerns of the school, students, and families.
Ability to build relationships between students and school staff.
Demonstrate district core values of student-centered decision making, respect, unity, high expectations, diversity, strong relationships, and equity.
Encourage, model, and maintain high standards of professional conduct and appearance.
Excellent attendance and timeliness.
Practice appropriate conflict resolution skills.
Demonstrate fairness and consistency in working with students, colleagues, and other staff.
Multi-task and work independently on position-related needs / tasks.
Use de-escalation, conflict resolution, and relationship-building strategies to support behavior regulation in students.
Provide assistance during hallway transition times and escort students to and from class as needed.
Assist with supervision during lunch periods as needed.
Provide regular feedback to school / district safety administration.
Be flexible and adaptable to meet changing requirements, processes, and procedures.
Work as a collaborative team member.
Check hall passes and / or ID cards for authenticity.
Assist in breaking up fights and controlling confrontational situations.
Monitor all restrooms and locker rooms.
Perform a variety of duties as directed by the building administrator / supervisor.
Safety :

Employee is responsible for ensuring all work performed meets the highest industry standards and is done in compliance with all local, state and federal requirements.
Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent. Additional coursework in equity, diversity, social justice, and positive behavioral strategies, d / or certifications in de escalation strategies, trauma informed care, as well as safety / security is preferred
CPR and / or AED training is preferred
Experience with the needs of a diverse student population is preferred
Experience working with youth in a supportive or supervisory capacity
Active involvement with youth in the community
