Position Purpose:

To conduct evaluations and provide services in the area of occupational therapy to students in the school setting.

Required Certifications/Licenses

WI DPI Occupational Therapy license; State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services Occupational Therapy Licensure; and successful completion of board certification with NBCOT. Valid WI Driver’s license is also required.

Formal Education

Bachelor’s (if graduation was prior to 2008). If graduated after 2008: Master's, or Doctoral Degree in Occupational Therapy

Preferred Experience

At least one (1) year successful experience as an Occupational Therapist in the school setting.

Experience working with students with a wide variety of school based occupational therapy needs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must have knowledge of the federal and state laws and regulations related to IDEA and service delivery for students with disabilities.

Promote skill acquisition and generalization to enhance development, learning and student participation.

Demonstrate knowledge of, or be willing to learn the state academic standards in order to align occupational therapy services and to support the implementation of the curriculum so that the student’s individual learning needs are met.

Knowledge of a variety of appropriate formal and informal occupational therapy assessment tools and methodologies.

Promotes the belief that all students can and will learn.

Must have excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Must have the ability and willingness to form partnerships and work collaboratively with other team members, including all school based staff.

Must have an excellent attendance record.

Ability to multitask, effectively prioritize and work independently on position related needs and tasks.

Must be flexible and adaptable to meet changing requirements, processes and procedures.

Maintain confidentiality of student records under FERPA and HIPAA.

Adheres to district policies and state special education timelines.

Must be proficient in the use of various software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Apps, and knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn Infinite Campus.

Essential Functions

Conduct an appropriate evaluation of children referred for occupational therapy concerns (fine motor, sensory, visual perceptual, etc).

Complete initial evaluations and reevaluations to determine eligibility or continued eligibility for school based occupational therapy needs as a related service.

Actively participate in IEP and evaluation meetings.

Assist in the development of IEPs for children with disabilities, ensuring that they are “college and career ready.”

Effectively deliver direct and indirect occupational therapy to students as indicated in Individualized Education Plans (or 504s) in their educational setting.

Effectively collaborate with other school personnel regarding strategies to meet the needs of students with IEPs or 504s.

Provide a continuum of services that shall include but is not limited to assessment of education-based OT need(s) in the areas of fine motor, visual motor, visual perceptual, sensory, and functional concerns; planning and developing the therapeutic intervention program; providing therapy for children with impairments in the areas of determined deficits; providing parent counseling/education; managing referrals and follow-up; consultative and resource services to other professional personnel.

Develop a treatment plan, and maintain records of services provided, including progress monitoring.

Complete Medicaid billing according to district timelines and expectations.

Interact in a positive, constructive manner with students, families, and fellow teachers/staff to accommodate the individual needs of the students.

Conduct assessments and provide training and support to students, staff, and/or parents in the use of various occupational therapy tools/strategies (low to high need), when applicable.

Demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of learning styles, as well as various functional academic and/or behavioral needs in order to relate to a wide variety of individuals.

Other duties as assigned by the Building administrator, Deputy Chief of Special Education or designee.

Work Environment

This position will primarily be in a school setting but may include travel within the district if assigned to multiple locations, which may include non-public school sites.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to spend up to 70% of the day walking.
  • Able to walk or run quickly through hallways and stairwells in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, respond to active crisis situations and support student movement.
  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
  • Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment
  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
