POSITION TITLE: Clerk of Scales

JOB DUTIES: Verify the presence of all the Jockeys in the Jockey Room at the appointed time. Supervise and direct all daily activities in the Jockey's Quarters. Ensure each horse carries its assigned weight. Check each rider's weight and report any over weights or Jockey changes to Stewards, Announcer, Television Dept., Equibase, Mutuels and Horsemen's Bookkeeper. Verify that all Jockeys that are scheduled to ride have either a copy of a current doctor's physical exam or a physical card on file. Record all Apprentice Rider’s wins on required documents. Supervise Valets during each racing program. Record all required data on a scale sheet and submit that data to the Horsemen's Bookkeeper at the end of each race day. Work in the Racing Office each day taking entries and "hustling horses", assisting horsemen and jockey agents. Assist with the drawing of races. Performs other duties as assigned. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of the Department Director, formally or informally, verbally or in writing.
PHYSICAL CAPACITIES & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Indoor and outdoor environment. Requires minimum travel from Racing Office and Jockey's Quarters/Paddock/Grandstand/Winner’s Circle.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two or more years prior experience in the field.
LICENSURE: Applicants must be able to pass pre-employment screening which may include physical/drug screen as well as background check and approval by the Illinois Racing Board in order to be licensed and hired for this position.
SKILLS: Thorough knowledge of Jockey's Quarters procedures. Strong communication skills. Demonstrate the ability to uphold the rules of racing and conduct themselves with the highest standards of integrity. Able to use copier, fax machine, computer, phone and radio. Good working knowledge of InCompass system preferred. Dependability is a must!
