RACE DATES: Energy Downs (Gillette)
May 7 – June 22, 2025, 18 days of racing
Wyoming Downs (Evanston)
June 24 – August 10, 2025, 18 days of racing
Sweetwater Downs (Rock Springs)
August 12 – September 28, 2025, 18 days of racing
Thunder Plains (Cheyenne)
September 24 – October 27, 2025, 16 days of racing

The Wyoming Gaming Commission is accepting applications for employment for a Safety Officer (1). The Commission has preference for someone that has previous employment as a Safety Officer, Steward, or Racing Official and has been certified by the Racing Officials Accreditation Program. The applicant shall be responsible to enforce the laws of the State of Wyoming and the rules promulgated by the Wyoming Gaming Commission.
- Current ROAP Steward or Racing Official Accreditation and in good standing.
- Knowledge of the racing industry as it pertains to regulations and enforcement. Including racing rules and regulations, integrity of the sport and race day operations.
- Ten or more years of prior experience in the racing industry.
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays and varying shifts.
- Self-Motivated, quick learner.
- Navigate multiple priorities proficiently.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word & Excel, Gmail, Google Worksheets & Google Calendar.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds.
- Conduct Pre-Race Meet racetrack safety inspections with the Commissions third party safety inspector team.
- Ensure all activities and practices involving the training and racing of horses at the racetrack meet required safety standards and regulatory guidelines.
- Monitor daily stable area activities and practices in the barn area and on the racetrack for
- Make recommendations to Racetrack Management and racing officials to ensure the welfare of horses and riders, the integrity of racing and compliance with applicable horse racing laws and regulations.
- Be available to the Stewards, State Vet, Safety Inspectors and track security personnel.
- Distribute violation and hearing notices as requested by the Stewards.
- Write daily and race day safety reports for Commission.
- Compile Injury Reports for race and training days.
- Conduct random barn and facility inspections to verify acceptable management, equine husbandry and veterinary practices.
- Conduct random license checks in the stable area.
- Observe the running of live races from the paddock to the starting gate for safety compliance.
- Help investigate potential rule violations, safety concerns or other matters and prepare written reports if requested to do so.
- Work closely with the Wyoming Gaming Commission stewards and staff to help enforce the rules and protect the safety of all participants both human and equine.
- The safety officer may also fill in as a steward if needed.
- 20-20 vision (corrected).
- Requires extensive walking on race days.
- Be able to climb stairs.
- Must be able to lift 35 lbs.
- Ten or more years of prior experience in the racing industry
- ROAP Certified
