Job Title : Director of Operations
Reports To : Superintendent
Supervises : Maintenance, Custodial, School Nutrition, and Transportation employees
Type of Position : Exempt
The Director of Operations will oversee the comprehensive management of School Nutrition, Maintenance and Facilities, Custodial Services, and Transportation departments. This role ensures that all operational areas align with organizational policies, federal, state, and local regulations, and contribute effectively to the educational mission of Radford City Schools.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Operational Management :
- Direct and coordinate daily operations across School Nutrition, Maintenance, Custodial Services, and Transportation departments, ensuring efficiency and compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Coordinates with Human Resources in the posting of new positions.
- Interviews and selection of future department staff positions.
- Ensures annual professional development requirements are met by all staff, including mandatory Human Resources module training.
Budget and Financial Oversight :
Develop and manage the annual budget for all operational areas, preparing financial reports and ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints.Preparation for the annual employment budget.Establish a fiscal budget for the Department of School Nutrition.School Nutrition and Training Oversight :
Attend regular Nutrition Manager meetings.Operates the annual Summer Food Service feeding program.Works with schools and low-income housing sites to establish meal time schedules.Oversees manager training programs; oversees the progression of managers in training and ensures appropriate skills and competencies are developed.Provides and oversees professional development training.Strategic Planning and Compliance :
Formulate and execute long-term and short-term plans for facility maintenance and improvements, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.Assist in the planning of kitchen facilities for future school construction or the remodeling of existing buildings within the division.Provide all necessary documentation for the Virginia Department of Education Federal Administrative Review for the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, School Food Service Program, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program.Attends semi-annual regional Virginia Department of Education for the School Nutrition Program meetings.Project Supervision :
Oversee and inspect maintenance projects conducted by internal staff and external contractors, ensuring timely and cost-effective completion.Regulatory Compliance :
Ensure all operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including health and safety standards for transportation and food services.Internal Controls :
Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard assets and maintain operational integrity across all departments.Collaboration and Communication :
Work with the Superintendent and other stakeholders to address financial and operational challenges, providing solutions to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.Prepare and present reports for school board meetings, and maintain open communication with the Director of Finance to coordinate accounting procedures.Professional Development and Supervision :
Stay informed about industry best practices and operational reforms through participation in relevant city and state organizations.Oversee and ensure professional development training and staff development initiatives.Supervisory Responsibilities :
Oversee all maintenance, custodial, transportation, and nutrition services staff by executing supervisory duties-including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and resolving staff issues-in compliance with Radford City School Board policies and applicable laws.Education and Experience :
Bachelor's Degree preferred.Minimum of five years of experience in building management or a related field.Proven expertise in custodial and maintenance operations, including familiarity with equipment and techniques.Physical Requirements :
Ability to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including computers, heavy equipment, and hand tools.Capacity to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds, with reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.Work Environment :
Work is performed both in an office setting and on-site at various school locations.Some exposure to outdoor conditions and hazardous environments may occur.The Director of Operations will play a crucial role in ensuring that all operational aspects of Radford City Schools function smoothly and efficiently, supporting the overall educational mission of the division.
