Job Summary
Radford University is seeking a detail-oriented Editor to support the development and refinement of proposals for new or modified academic degree programs submitted to the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia ( SCHEV ) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges ( SACSCOC ). This role is critical in ensuring that proposals are meticulously prepared, meet SCHEV and SACSCOC guidelines, and effectively communicate the academic rigor and strategic vision of Radford University. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, academic administrators, and other stakeholders to enhance proposal clarity, consistency, and overall quality.
The Editor will apply knowledge of research, planning, analysis, evaluation, and measurement techniques, and specialized knowledge of academic program planning and review as well as a deep understanding of SCHEV (state agency) Policies and related SACSCOC Policies. This position will provide technical, policy, and editorial guidance to faculty, chairs, and deans on plans for new degree programs, modifications to programs, and closure of programs. The Editor will provide guidance regarding the modification of policies and procedures to support academic program planning and review at Radford University to the Assistant Provost and Provost. This position has considerable independence in project leadership and decision-making based on knowledge of specialty areas and interpretation of SCHEY , VA, SACSCOC , and RU Policies.
Key Responsibilities
Proposal Editing & Refinement:
Utilize a comprehensive approach to editing including both in-line edits and additional comments
Review and edit academic program proposals to ensure clarity, accuracy, and adherence to SCHEV formatting and style guidelines.
Enhance narrative components to clearly articulate program objectives, rationale, curricula, and anticipated outcomes.
Ensure proposals reflect the university’s academic standards and strategic priorities.
Compliance & Quality Assurance:
Verify that proposals meet SCHEV requirements and any applicable state or institutional policies, and accreditation requirements.
Maintain consistency in language, terminology, and formatting across all documents.
Collaborate with subject matter experts and academic personnel to validate content accuracy.
Collaboration & Communication:
Work closely with faculty, department chairs, and curriculum committees to understand program content and ensure proposals meet stakeholder expectations.
Provide constructive feedback and recommendations for improving proposal content and structure.
Liaise with the Assistant Provost for Faculty and Curriculum regarding revisions, approvals, and final submissions.
A positive and proactive attitude is needed to collaborate, process constructive criticism, and respond positively to feedback.
Process Improvement:
Develop and refine editorial guidelines and templates tailored to SCHEV and SACSCOC proposal submissions.
Identify opportunities to streamline the proposal development process and implement best practices.
Stay informed about changes to SCHEV submission guidelines and policies; higher education trends; and SACSCOC accreditation requirements.
Project Management:
Manage multiple proposal editing projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while meeting established deadlines.
Track document revisions and maintain organized records of all proposal versions for audit and review purposes.
Maintain organized records of proposal revisions, feedback, and final versions for audit and reference purposes
Required Qualifications
Professional writing or editing experience, preferably with academic proposals, grant submissions, or similar documents
Advanced Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, and document management software.
Experience using editing and collaboration tools that support version control and feedback.
Exceptional attention to detail with an ability to identify and correct errors in grammar, punctuation, and formatting.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to provide clear, constructive feedback to diverse stakeholders.
Ability to synthesize complex information and ensure proposals are both persuasive and compliant with regulatory standards.
Capable of managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and maintaining high standards under pressure.
Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and build strong working relationships with faculty and administrators.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working within higher education environments and familiarity with academic program development is highly desirable.
Familiarity with SCHEV guidelines, the Virginia Higher education landscape, and the processes associated with proposing new or modified academic programs.
Understanding of academic terminology, program structures, and curriculum development.
