Chief Objective of Position : The Department of Art at Radford University seeks applications for its Artist-in-Residence program, with a starting date in August 2025. The residency occurs in the fall semester with an option to extend to the spring, pending funding and support. Candidates at any career stage and in any relevant medium or discipline are welcome to apply.
Supported by the Andrew Ross Visiting Artist Legacy Fund, funding is provided to support housing and living costs. For regionally-located candidates, it is possible to commute, but relocation is preferred to meet the expectations of the program. To supplement the residency stipend, candidates may elect to teach in the department as an adjunct, pending scheduling needs.
Job Summary : Over the fall semester, resident artists are expected to produce research or creative scholarship on campus; interact with students and faculty through workshops, critiques, and / or guest lectures; and contribute to departmental culture. The selected candidate gains access to facilities including studios, labs, libraries, archives, and galleries and may choose to work on campus or at Selu, the university’s 380-acre nature conservancy with a retreat center, observatory, classrooms, and labs. Other responsibilities and resources may be arranged to fit the selected candidate’s skills and aspirations. The residency program culminates with a lecture and solo exhibition at the Radford University Art Museum in the spring semester. Resident artists may propose alternatives or additions to the aforementioned expectations.
If selected to teach as an adjunct, possible teaching choices include : professional practices, foundations, special topics, or the graduate-level concept lab. Other opportunities may exist, pending discussion with the department chair.
Required Qualifications : Candidates must satisfy one of the following requirements : 1) a master’s degree in the field / discipline in which they are teaching; 2) enrolled in a master’s program with at least 18 hours of relevant coursework completed; 3) significant professional experience, subject to approval by the Provost.
Preferred Qualifications : MFA degree with some teaching experience at the college level. Experience as a graduate teaching assistant may be acceptable.
Education : Artists-in-residence and adjunct faculty must hold an advanced degree or equivalent credentials based on experience consistent with accreditation criteria of the discipline and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
