Job Summary :
The Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) supports the Resident Engineer in contract management, administration, and coordination of rail construction projects. The ARE is responsible for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating construction engineering documents, as well as supervising field inspection and material testing to ensure project compliance and quality standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
Manage contract administration, coordination, and oversight on rail construction projects of various sizes.
Interpret, organize, and coordinate construction engineering documents.
Supervise and monitor field staff to ensure contractor work meets project plans, specifications, and contractual requirements.
Analyze complex construction / design challenges and develop new or improved techniques and procedures.
Represent projects and clients in meetings and conferences.
Assist in business development efforts and pursue new opportunities for the company.
Review and respond to Contractor correspondence as needed.
Interpret plans and ensure contractor progress aligns with the approved Progress Schedule.
Mentor and train junior staff members.
Perform additional duties as required to meet business needs.
Qualifications :
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :
Strong understanding of railroad construction methods.
Hands-on experience with field engineering tasks of increasing responsibility.
Expertise in earthwork and utilities within transportation construction projects.
Required Education & Experience :
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
Minimum 3 years of track construction experience, including switches and associated utilities.
Minimum 5 years of experience as a Senior Inspector, Resident Engineer (RE), or Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) in transportation construction.
Ability to interpret construction plans and specifications for track construction.
Rail Safety Training certification required.
Preferred Education & Experience :
Experience with local agencies and rail projects.
Knowledge of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) implementation.
Structures construction experience in transportation projects.
Experience in multi-discipline and agency coordination.
Additional Qualifications & Certifications :
- Engineer in Training (EIT) or California Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities :
Oversee contract management, administration, and coordination for projects of various sizes and scopes.
Mentor and train staff, ensuring professional development and technical expertise.
Monitor assigned staff to verify that contractor activities align with project plans, specifications, and contractual requirements.
Implement on-site procedures to enhance staff efficiency and ensure smooth project execution.
Administer and manage contracts and budgets, ensuring compliance and financial accountability.

Additional Compensation : Based on qualifications and experience , the salary range for this position is $130,000 - $150,000 per year .
