What are the responsibilities and job description for the Call for Proposals: Electives Instructor position at Rainier Scholars?
CALL FOR PROPOSALS! Rainier Scholars - Tacoma is seeking members of the Tacoma community to teach elective courses during our Summer Stretch Academy.
ORGANIZATION:
Rainier Scholars is a comprehensive academic enrichment program that supports students of color over a 12-year journey – from 5th grade to college graduation. We seek to serve those who are most under-represented on college campuses and have the greatest number of barriers to achieving a college education: 85% qualify as low-income, 90% would be the first in their family to earn a college degree. Our program offers rigorous academics, leadership development and personalized support for scholars, providing access to educational pathways and myriad opportunities previously unimagined.
With a budget size of $10 million, a staff team of 50 full-time employees and 675 scholars and families whom we currently serve in Seattle and Tacoma, Rainier Scholars has established a positive brand for our unwavering commitment to education, proven success rate, and sustainable impact. We grow new generations of diverse college graduates, career professionals, and community leaders.
SUMMARY:
Rainier Scholars – Tacoma launched in late spring 2021 and welcomed its first cohort during the summer of June 2022 and was designed as a unique public-school partnership that collaborates alongside fellow educators to improve the outcomes of students who face the biggest barriers to success. We work towards the larger goal of expanding opportunities for everyone by centering the experiences of Multi-Generational African Americans, a group facing a highly complex set of barriers due to the country’s history of enslavement and segregation, in our program design.
Elective courses in our Summer Stretch session play an important role in our integrated, comprehensive approach, allowing 9-11 year old students to participate in “non-traditional” learning environments, explore potential new areas of interest or pursue a current passion, and engage their bodies and minds in different ways. We are open to exploring a wide range of options and are particularly interested in the arts, sports/martial arts, computer science, etc.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitate a total of eight sessions across four weeks, split into two halves. Sessions will be offered for one group of students for the first two weeks, then repeated for a new group of students for the second half. Sessions will run Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:40-3:00 pm at Hunt Middle School, starting on July 8th. Class sizes will vary depending on interest. Compensation for instructors is $100 per 90 minute session.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with young people
Successful completion of a background check
Proposal of planned activities and itemized budget* (if applicable)
Rainier Scholars will be able to provide some materials and equipment for classes, as well as storage for supplies. An itemized budget will be requested with a proposal if the instructor will not be providing their own equipment.
COMPENSATION:
This Electives Instructor is a contracted position and has a total stipend of $1,000, paid upon completion of teaching eight elective sessions throughout the Summer Stretch programming.
Our work is rooted in ensuring people from marginalized communities have the opportunity to thrive in education and careers that they are passionate about. Rainier Scholars is an equal opportunity employer committed to promoting an equitable and inclusive environment for our scholars, families, and staff. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, and strongly encourage people of color, first generation college graduates, and people from working class backgrounds to apply.
