OVERVIEW:
Rainy Day Books is more than a bookstore. Since 1975, we’ve served as a wellspring of ideas and inspiration for our community. Through personalized reading recommendations and hundreds of community events we aim to educate and entertain, build curiosity and community. We’re a tight knit team that relies on flexibility and enthusiasm in wearing the many hats required by small businesses. The environment is lively and fast-paced as we look to steward Rainy Day Books into the next phase of its next 50 years.
With new Ownership and Management, we’re looking to reach a wider audience and a more diverse audience. We aim to bring more people to our events and into our store. The Rainy Day Books General Manager oversees most all tasks and responsibilities related to operating Rainy Day Books and is responsible for managing the entire in-store experience for customers and employees. The General Manager oversees four salaried direct reports and all other part time team members (8-10). The General Manager reports to co-owners Tyler Enders and Keith Bradley on a regular basis, and to the Strategic Advisory Committee on a quarterly basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Customer Service: Exemplify phenomenal customer service at all times. Act as a leader and role model to all staff. Ensure the best possible customer service at all times from all team members.
Manage, Train, and Coach the Team: Support your direct reports to provide guidance, feedback, accountability, and encouragement. All employees including all Booksellers report to the General Manager.
Provide Quarterly Touch Bases with each Employee. Immediately address any shortcomings with the employee in question in a constructive manner.
Scheduling: Create the in-store schedule using When I Work. Problem solve coverage issues.
Hiring & Training: Perform all hiring and training.
Sales Goals & Strategies: Coach and motivate the team to hit monthly sales goals. Work with Ownership and other team members to plan, hone, and execute new and existing strategies.
Buying: Oversee the entire buying process including all books and sidelines via the Rainy Day Books Buyer. Leverage the entire team to produce phenomenal buying results with diversity and depth.
Events: Oversee the entire event process, providing coaching, support, and guidance to the Events Manager.
Marketing: Maintain a dynamic website and social media presence. Leverage other marketing opportunities and partnerships to promote Rainy Day Books
Nurture and Build Culture: Build a culture to celebrate. Encourage more ARC reading, more participation in events and book clubs. Generate new ideas from the team.
Financial Analysis: Review sales data and inventory on a regular basis, looking for opportunities to increase sales and to more efficiently use capital. No more than 8 hours / month.
DAY TO DAY EXPECTATIONS:
Floor Coverage: Except during unique situations, the General Manager shall expect to spend 30-40% of their time working the Sales Floor. As specific needs change from Buying to Hiring to Special Events, this expectation may change.
Event Participation: The General Manager is expected to have a physical presence at roughly 25% of all Rainy Day Books Events.
DETAILS: 40-45 hours of work per week on average including nights and weekends. The GM is expected to spend some time in the shop on weekends. 25 Total PTO Days, 9 Paid Holidays. In combination, the Retail Director and General Manager are responsible for working 4 holidays each year including Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Only one person needs to work each day, thus each person is only working 2 holidays / year.

16 Days of Paid Time Off, including sick days, personal days, and vacation. PTO is to be requested 2 weeks in advance except in the case of sick days and emergencies.
Blackout PTO: between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, only one PTO day is permitted. Health Insurance through BlueCross BlueShield paid for 50% by employer. Family members may be added at the employee’s expense. 401k Match - eligibility begins after one year.
Conference Opportunities: Rainy Day Books will cover travel and stay for a minimum of two conferences per year.
Compensation Range: $70,000 - $85,000
Annual compensation is reviewed annually. Year end bonuses are paid based upon Employee Performance and Company’s Fiscal Performance.
