General Description:
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse (RN) in Neurology provides nursing care to a diverse range of patients with varying health conditions, from simple to complex. As part of a comprehensive stroke center, you’ll deliver high-quality care in a fast-paced environment, assisting with the treatment and management of neurological and orthopedic patients.
Required Education & Certifications:
- Education:
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited program required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Licensure:
- Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIHSS certification required (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale).

Position Overview:
Under general supervision, the Neuro Registered Nurse delivers comprehensive care to patients with a broad range of neurological and orthopedic conditions. As part of a leading stroke center, you'll thrive in a high-energy setting, managing both routine and complex care needs.
Education & Credentials Required:
Education:
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Licensure & Certifications:
- Active RN license with the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing or valid multistate compact license (eNLC)
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Management: Provide dedicated nursing care to patients on the Neuro/Ortho floor, adjusting care based on patient responses.
- Charting: Record all interventions and patient outcomes accurately.
- Physician Collaboration: Support physicians in exams and minor procedures.
- Monitoring: Track patient vitals and intervene promptly when necessary.
- Medication: Administer medications and monitor for adverse effects.
- IV Therapy: Start, regulate, and oversee IV fluids and blood transfusions.
- Care Implementation: Provide care according to established protocols.
- Family Communication: Educate patients and their families on treatment plans and hospital protocols.
- Referrals & Delegation: Refer patients for additional services and delegate appropriate tasks.
- Float Requirement: Must be open to floating to similar departments when needed.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience: At least 1 year of RN experience (Neuro or stroke unit preferred)
- Clinical Knowledge: Familiarity with nursing theory, clinical practices, and patient care procedures
- Coordination: Skilled in planning and evaluating nursing services
- Communication: Strong verbal/written skills and cultural sensitivity
- Team Collaboration: Ability to build strong professional relationships
- Tech Skills: Proficient with basic computer systems
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in Neuro or Stroke Care units
Schedule Details:
- 3 shifts per week (12 hours each)
- Every other weekend required
- Must be flexible to float as needed

- Documentation: Document patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed treatments, ensuring accuracy in patient records.
- Physician Assistance: Assist physicians in the examination and treatment of patients, including performing minor diagnostic procedures as needed.
- Monitoring: Obtain and monitor physiological data of patients, recognizing and intervening as necessary to address changes in condition.
- Medication Administration: Administer prescribed medications and monitor patients for any reactions or side effects.
- IV & Blood Product Management: Initiate, regulate, and monitor intravenous infusions and blood products as per physician orders.
- Care Delivery: Deliver patient care competently and within established protocols and best practices.
- Patient & Family Interaction: Share and explain the care plan with patients and families, and provide information on hospital procedures and discharge instructions.
- Referral & Delegation: Make patient care referrals as needed and delegate appropriate tasks to support staff.
- Flexibility: May be asked to float to similar units as needed, ensuring continuity of care.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience, with neurology or stroke care experience preferred.
- Clinical Knowledge: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
- Patient Care Coordination: Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services, applying appropriate nursing techniques.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to respond to the cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
- Teamwork: Ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and other healthcare professionals.
- Computer Skills: Basic computer skills required.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Neuro/Stroke Experience: Previous experience in neurological care or stroke unit settings preferred.
