Job Overview
This position reports to the Controller. You will help to develop the skill sets of the Accounting Specialist and support the Controller in running the department. This role will assist with receiving, sorting, and proofing accounting documents, and posts to the accounting system. Process and post all incoming and outgoing wire transfers, handle member requests, prepare daily deposits and reconciliations. This position requires good organizational skills and a thorough knowledge of basic bookkeeping and accounting principles and the ability to apply them. A high degree of timeliness, efficiency, and accuracy are required to successfully execute this position. Qualifications
Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of experience of 3 years in accounting experience.
- Knowledge of advanced financial accounting practices and procedures.
- Understanding of general accepted accounting principles, government regulations and reporting requirements.
- Familiarity with related auditing and data processing functions.
- Understanding of automated accounting applications.
- Knowledge of Credit Union environment, operations and information flow.
- Knowledge of related computer applications (Excel, Word, ERP Systems, Accounting Software)
- Well organized, accurate and attentive to details.
- Understanding of the Federal Reserve Banking System.
- Previous credit union or financial institution experience preferred
Role Description and Essential Duties
- Assists the Controller in developing long and short-run operational goals and objectives for the Accounting Department. Processes and posts all incoming and outgoing wire transfers. Continually reviews established systems, accounting policies, and procedures and recommends improvements.
- Ensures policies are in accordance with changing regulations, legal requirements, and industry trends. Manage and coordinate investment reporting and ALM reporting utilizing related software systems. Assists the Controller in ensuring that proper accounting controls are in place.
- Prepare and complete all federal backup withholding tax deposits. Ensure that records, statements, and reports are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and government regulations. Ensure that external document submissions and filings (including tax returns) are accurate and timely. Manage, automate, and simplify reporting and data collection activities relating to asset and liability activities, investment functions, and investment accounting functions.
- Keep related software systems current, efficient, and functional.
- Coordinate functions with other departments to convey and obtain required information. Keep management informed of area activities and of any significant problems. Assist and support Credit Union personnel.
- Respond to accounting questions and information needs. Any transactions which are outside the established purchasing policies are reported to the Controller or CFO. Maintain regular contact with other departments to obtain information and to correct transactions.
- Assists and advises branch and department managers in handling issues surrounding accounting, budgeting, analyses, and reporting.
- Stay informed of trends and changes in the accounting field. Ensure the department work area is clean, secure, and well maintained. Ensure that appropriate levels of confidentiality and security are maintained. Completes special projects and miscellaneous assignments as required by the Controller or CFO.
- Complies with all Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) rules and regulations, in addition to Customer Identification Program (CIP). Attends required annual BSA training and required compliance training.
- Assist with all other duties as assigned or identified.
