The Laboratory Billing Representative I is responsible for reviewing all patient and Insurance correspondence, returning patient phone calls in a professional and timely manner. Performs functions critical to managing self-pay, insurance, and divisional credit balance accounts per departmental and company policy. Also, review all claims prior to insurance billing for coding errors.

On an average day, you will:
- Handle all patient correspondence, phone calls in a professional and courteous manner. All phone calls must be returned in 48 hours.
- Reconcile Lab CPT to ICD 10 daily on charges, prior to them going to the insurance carrier.
- Review credit balance accounts for possible overpayments or erroneous adjustments on daily basis. Transferring patient credits to open vouchers prior to processing patient refund requests in a timely and accurate manner.
- Process all insurance correspondence in a timely manner.
- Critical thinking/research claim issues and file appeals as needed.
- Process adjustments / write offs per department policy and provide supporting documentation with the appropriate notes.
- Maintains strict confidentiality and comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
- Maintain the security of protected health information (PHI); including what PHI access is allowed and the reason for access to PHI.
To qualify for this job, you must have:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- CPC certification a PLUS.
- 3 years of experience in Lab billing/insurance follow up.
- Proficient with ICD 10, CPT.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Data entry skills.
- Experience with Allscripts PM/EHR and MS Excel are preferred.
Physical requirements and work environment:
- Sitting for approximately 90% percent of the day.
- Periods of walking, standing, bending, lifting, and reaching.
- Manual dexterity using a calculator or keyboard.
- Fine motor skills.
- Visual acuity.
