Job Summary
Winchester Community High School is seeking a passionate, dynamic, and dedicated Band Director to lead our bands, inspire our students, and uphold the school’s tradition of musical excellence. The Band Director will oversee all aspects of the band program, including Advanced Band, Jazz Band, Summer Band on the CITSA Circuit, and Pep Band, fostering a love for music while helping students develop their skills and realize their potential.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership:
- Direct and manage the Advanced Band, Jazz Band, Summer Band on the CITSA Circuit, Pep Band, Indoor Percussion, and Colorguard.
- Plan and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate rehearsals, performances, and competitions.
- Cultivate a culture of teamwork, respect, and excellence within the band program.
- Demonstrate the ability to recruit, hire, and mentor a skilled and supportive staff to assist with the band program.
Instruction:
- Teach students the fundamentals and advanced techniques of music performance, theory, and appreciation.
- Provide individualized and group instruction to help students develop their musical skills.
- Prepare students for performances, including concerts, pep band events, competitions, solo and ensemble, and community events.
Administrative Duties:
- Develop and manage the band program’s budget, including fundraising efforts.
- Organize and oversee logistics for travel, competitions, and performances.
- Maintain and care for the school’s inventory of musical instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
- Help facilitate the band parent/booster organization.
Community and Collaboration:
- Collaborate with school staff, administration, and the community to promote the band program.
- Foster relationships with parents, alumni, and community members to support the band’s activities.
- Actively engage in recruiting students for the band program.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field.
- Valid Indiana teaching license or the ability to obtain one.
- Experience directing high school-level bands, including concert, jazz, and marching bands.
- Strong knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy, arranging, and performance.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Commitment to promoting student growth, equity, and inclusion in the arts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with the CITSA circuit or similar summer band circuits.
- At least 5 years of experience as a director of bands in a high school with a competitive marching band.
- Proven track record of success in band competitions and performances.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff and adapt to the needs of a rural school community.
