Job Description
Summary/objective
The Medical Assistant supports the operation of the Randolph College Health Center which
provides healthcare services to Randolph College students. These services include health
assessment, treatment and/or referral of health problems, injuries, emergencies, and health
education and counseling.
Essential functions
Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform

1. Provide health care services to Randolph College students by:
Obtaining the students health history.
Performing a physical exam based on the students complaints.
Consulting the Health Center Director as needed.
Referring the student to the nurse practitioner or off-campus provider as needed.
Providing treatment as specified in the Policy and Procedure Manual.
Dispensing over the counter medication samples or calling in a medication order to
the students selected pharmacy in accordance with the Policy and Procedure
Manual and the State Board of Pharmacy Regulations.
Utilizing all contacts with students as a means for education, prevention and health
promotion.
Documenting the above information for each student utilizing the S.O.A.P. format
(subjective, objective, assessment, plan).
2. Prepare patients for examination by the nurse practitioner.
3. Assist the nurse practitioner as needed; chaperone nurse practitioner as needed.
4. Monitor and care for patients staying in the Health Center for observation.
5. Obtain specimens as needed for lab tests (blood, urine, etc.) utilizing appropriate
infection control techniques.
6. Perform point of care lab tests including hemoglobin, urine pregnancy test, urine
dipstick, blood glucose, strep, COVID-19, influenza, and mono.
7. Schedule appointments for referrals (x-ray, dental, off campus specialists etc.).
8. Send reminders to students as needed for lab work, follow-up visits, vaccines.
9. Answer the telephone and make appointments for the Health and Counseling Center
staff as needed.
10. Maintain an adequate stock of medications, medical and laboratory supplies.
11. Maintain supplies and equipment in medicine and treatment rooms.
12. Recharge otoscopes on a regular basis at the end of the day
13. Assume responsibility for closing the Health Center, depending on hours scheduled, and
locking all doors, file cabinets, medicine cabinets, copy room.
14. Assist with new student record review, orientation activities and follow-up tracking.
15. Assist with health education activities as requested.
16. Continuing education: attend conferences, workshops, participate in online free CMEs
and read professional literature to keep current with College Health issues and trends.
Supervisory responsibilities:
None directly; however, may assume responsibility for the Health Center in the Directors
absence.
Work environment:
Randolph College Health Center located on the campus of Randolph College.
Physical demands:
May occasionally need to lift up to 25 lbs. or may walk and/or bend in the performance of the
job functions.
Travel required:
Infrequent.
Required education and experience:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill and/or ability

Certification as a medical assistant in the State of Virginia.
BLS CPR certification by the American Heart Association.
(Preferred) one (1) year of progressive experience in a medical care facility.
Work authorization/security clearance requirements:
Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Pre-employment criminal background check.
