Laboratory Supervisor - Medical Technologist in Roanoke, VA
Full Time Job Opportunity
Shift: Must be flexible as oversees all shifts in hospital setting - Monday-Friday - No Weekends or Holidays unless need calls to help coverage/support of staff.
Must Have: Board certification in MLS, MLT for state of VA 4 year degree in scientific field (Preferably MicroBiology or similar) If the candidate is eligible to sit for MLS/MLT certification, that works.
HOSPITAL LOCATION - will require additional credentialing to be completed
Intake Notes:
- Candidate needs strong clinical microbiology experience
- Needs more experience than just COVID testing, molecular and microbiology are closely associated so titles may be more "Molecular Bio Lab Supervisor" but they are doing micro work as well, please check this closely.
- Must have or at least be eligible to gain certification (MLS/MLT/CLS/ASCP)
- Must be a good people leader
- Students rotate through the lab so this person needs to be able to teach, train, mentor junior scientists.
- Managing 3 shifts (approx. 30 people) will need to be available for visits on all three shifts but is mainly working 1st shift hours.
- Local candidates preferred, potential for relocation assistance for great candidates.
- 40 to 50 hours a week expected
Job Summary:
Under direction of the manager/director, plan, organize, schedule and direct the work of the section in order to effectively maximize employees, equipment and material utilization within budgetary constraints while adhering to quality technical standards. Accountable for quantity and quality of specimens handled and test results.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee activities of the department, distribute/assign work, determine priorities, schedule non-routine procedures.
- Perform supervisory functions for their assigned staff including interviewing, hiring, training and providing staff development through performance evaluation and corrective counseling.
- Perform advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques. May duplicate work of others to confirm test results. Re-evaluate methodology, make recommended changes and assists in test interpretation. Determine if further testing should be done on samples or if test should be repeated.
- Check/approve all specialized and problem reports for accuracy.
- Initiate quality-control measures and monitor quality of work for adherence to laboratory standards.
- Perform duties of technologist as necessitated by absence or peak workload.
- Completes special projects as requested - surveys, statistical reports, studies, research, etc.
- Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition.
- Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
- Adheres to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements.
- Required to use (a) personal protective equipment, (b) engineering controls and/or (c) work practice controls as directed by management.
- Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable.
- Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed.

Required Work Experience:
- Minimum 4-5 years full-time supervisory experience is highly preferred. As little as 1-2 years is acceptable only if the candidate has good people skills
- Virginia State Board Certified MLS or MLT, along with 4 year degree in scientific field REQUIRED
- 1-3 years hands on experience in hospital Micro/Molecular laboratory testing. Microbiology experience is a MUST and it has to be hands on and not simply research.
- Comprehensive theoretical and operational job knowledge in designated specialty required.
- Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
- Required to handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals
Knowledge/Skills:
- Proven leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities and to handle several tasks simultaneously for maximum department efficiency.
- Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with employees, co-workers and clients.
- Ability to deal with client information in a confidential manner.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and Laboratory Information
- Systems.
- Critical thinker with excellent communication/interpersonal skills that also has empathy. The candidate will be communicating directly with physicians to discuss test results, so this is where the hands on experience is required as they have to speak with confidence to the results
Salary : $80,000 - $90,000
