What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Technician I position at Range?
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the oversight of the Construction Supervisor-Worland or Plant Supervisor-Forsyth, the Construction Technician-I performs entry-level labor and project work. The role requires basic knowledge of fiber optic, copper, and ariel cabling, and operations of industrial equipment (vibratory plow, trencher, digging equipment and industrial pneumatic bore). Work tasks are laborious and require use of hand tools (shovels, drills, hammers, etc.). In support of the Technician-II and Leads, this role assists with placement and removal of cable, performs splices, and maintains or repairs cables in accordance with construction plans and work orders. Requires use and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Frequent travel for construction projects is a requirement for success in this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:
1) Perform in a support role and place direct buried cabling (fiber, copper) into the ground/earth.
a. Perform earthwork labor with various hand tools and industry related equipment (vibratory plow, trencher, digging equipment, industrial pneumatic bore).
b. Perform maintenance of buried cable, performing tests and repairs (removals, replacement, and splicing).
c. Restore all disturbed surfaces including concrete and pavement surfaces to acceptable condition.
d. As assigned, operates (when supervised) various heavy equipment, as needed (plows, backhoes, trailer, etc.).
e. Mounts demarcation devices and protectors at customer premises.
f. Assists with the maintenance of construction equipment, trailers, and vehicles.
2) Performs related construction tasks as required.
3) Aerial Cabling:
a. Assists with installation and removal of aerial cable and pole lines.
b. Assists with inspection, replacement, or repair of aerial cable and poles.
c. Select and attach appropriate hardware, install, or reinstall in accordance with project work order.
4) Cable Splicing:
a. Work with copper and fiber optic cables in accordance with construction plans and drawings (new construction).
5) Maintenance and Repairs with Copper and Fiber Optic cabling:
a. Assist with preventative maintenance on project worksite(s) cables.
b. Perform cable tests to troubleshoot issues and identify defective component or section.
c. Repair, or remove and replace defective cable section or related component(s).
d. Remove obsolete cable as appropriate.
6) Mount demarcation devices and system protectors at assigned project work locations (customer’s property, field work site, company’s facility).
7) Assist with Data Center frames, tip cables and fiber distribution frames and cables, as necessary.
8) Operate daily, a computer system and software programs which include, but are not limited to performing documentation of time entries, expense reports, material usage documentation, review credit card statements, and process fiber testing reports (from test meters).
a. Other computer programs operated daily, include mapping software, MS Teams, and Virtual trainings (webinars, videos).
9) Maintain and organize department files related to current / completed jobs, and receipts.
10) Perform data entry into Excel, denoting cable footages, reel numbers, and other materials used.
11) Schedule meetings with customers, contractors, and other utilities to go over plans for jobs.

13) Perform other construction duties, and work functions as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION):
(A combination of demonstrable years’ experience and applicable alternative training(s) may be considered in lieu of the following qualifications).
a) Successful completion of a grade-12 high school diploma program, equivalent GED type of secondary education certificate / diploma.
b) A minimum of one (1) year of successful work experience performing construction work, and operating mechanical/pneumatic equipment.
c) A valid, state issued, and insurable drivers’ license.
Preferred: Completion of one or more of the following certifications:
d) Successful completion of Technical School, a 2-year / associate degree (in Electronics, Telecommunications, and/or Construction),
Class A CDL Tower Certification Pole Certification

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
This role performs assigned work duties within a general office environment and outside. Employees may be exposed to changing weather conditions or occasionally contaminants. Other functions and demands, include the following:
a) Stands and walks while performing assigned work on project work sites, often in outdoor environments for up to 8 hours / day, or longer depending on the demands of the job.
b) Frequently works in outdoor settings and is not necessarily protected from weather conditions.
c) Frequent use of technology, computers, devices, hand tools, power tools and industrial equipment (Repetitive hand motion and physical exertion is required).
d) This role may be assigned work required travel, which can reach up to 75% of the role’s schedule.
e) Performs functions that present physical hazards, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, intense vibrations, high pitched noise exposures, working on scaffolding / ladders and high places, working in small areas (crawl spaces, trenches, etc.), and/or exposure to chemicals in work setting.
f) Hearing, listening, talking, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, squatting, balancing, pushing/pulling, and climbing stairs are all expectations of this role, although some of these functions may be more seldom performed than others.
g) Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds at times.
h) Must follow all safety policies / procedures, and always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
i) Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
