What are the responsibilities and job description for the Asphalt Plant Operator position at Ranger Construction?
Summary:
The Asphalt Plant Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient start and operation of a hot-mix asphalt plant. S/he will be responsible for manufacturing various asphalt products according to mix design and customer jobsite specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Primary function will include mixing ingredients to produce asphalt paving materials.
- Operating duties include temperature control, ingredient control, and customer truck loading.
- Operate controls to batch material.
- Observe operation of machinery to ensure conformance to processing specifications.
- Responsible for equipment maintenance; perform pre- and post- shift inspections documenting items in need of service or repair, diagnosing problems, and performing minor mechanical repair.
- Control inventory of materials.
- Read and/or write delivery tickets to determine mix design called for each load.
- Perform calculations for differing load sizes.
- Load hot mix asphalt into haul trucks.
- Report mechanical failures and/or material inconsistencies to supervisor.
- Perform projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or its equivalent preferred.
- 3 years of related asphalt plant operating experience.
- Previous experience in operating various types of heavy equipment preferred, but not required.
- Able to recognize various products by sight and to understand proper plant operation.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions; function effectively as part of a team; ability to work under pressure; communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
- Mechanical aptitude is desirable.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

The employee frequently is required to stand, (for up to 8 eight hours), walk (occasionally on rough terrain/in varying weather conditions), climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push, and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment and the movement of mobile equipment.
