What are the responsibilities and job description for the Asphalt Roller Operator position at Ranger Construction?
Summary:
The Finish or Back Roller Operator is responsible for the operation of a steel and/or rubber wheeled roller to smooth asphalt to required density, rideability, appearance and quality, and assisting with all phases of the paving operation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Compact and smooth asphalt to attain the required density.
- Constantly monitor water system on roller drum to assure that asphalt material is not sticking and picking up on drum.
- Execute the correct number of passes and rolling pattern to obtain proper density and appearance.
- Inspect physical condition of roller for damage or wear that may affect productivity and/or safety and report any findings to Supervisor
- Grease, fuel and water the roller; check all fluid levels, belts gauges etc.; check all spray tips and mats ensuring cleanliness and proper operation.
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task; properly follow all Company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Perform projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or its equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in paving and in operating heavy equipment is required.
- Knowledge of paving equipment operation and job tasks.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions; communicate with supervisors, co-workers and the public.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work and typical office equipment, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws, and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push, and pull with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
